Obituary of Lawrence "Larry" MacDonald, Glace Bay

Lawrence Joseph “Larry” MacDonald, age 91 passed away on Friday, May 10th, 2019 at the CBRH, Sydney. Born in Reserve Mines, he was the son of the late John and Nora (MacDonald) MacDonald.

Larry was a devout catholic and member of Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay,’Caledonia’. He worked in the coal mines for over 40 years and enjoyed every minute of being underground with the boys. Larry enjoyed watching baseball, wrestling and his Toronto Maple Leafs. He will be remembered as a quiet gentleman who always treated women with the upmost respect and dignity.

He is survived by his second wife, Germaine (McDonald) MacDonald and predeceased by his first wife, Phoebe (Quann) MacDonald. Larry is survived by his daughter, Norita Jewels (Eddie), stepdaughters, Yvonne Currie, Barbara Timmons (Wally), sons, Frank (Debbie), Larry (Carol-deceased), Bob (Sandy), Derrick (Charlene), Bill (Jackie) and stepsons, John (Val), Kenneth (Sabena) and Lloyd (Lynn).

Larry is also survived by a sister, Blanche (Joe LeClair), brother, Bobby (Priscilla), many grand and great grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents and first wife, Larry was predeceased by his sisters, Sarah, Kay, Josie, Sr. Nora (Sisters of Charity), brothers, Hughie, Mike, Joe and a stepson, Tom.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the personal care workers, your grace and dignity along with the apple pies you brought to Da will always be remembered.

Visitation is Thursday, May 16th from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. only at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Chapel & Reception Centre, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. The funeral mass, officiated by Fr. Norman MacPhee is Friday at 11 a.m. in Holy Cross Church followed by a reception in the church hall. Interment in the parish cemetery.
