Obituary of Eugene Thaddeus "Teddy" Saccary, Glace Bay

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather, great great grandfather, Teddy Saccary, age 93 on Monday, May 20th, 2019 at Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay.

Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Mose and Catherine (McKinnon) Saccary and loving husband of the late Bertha (MacKinnon) Saccary.

Teddy was employed with the Dominion Coal Company for many years, having worked in No. 1 and No. 26 collieries. He was also a veteran of the Second World War, a member of the RCL, Branch No. 3, Glace Bay and later holding a lifetime membership with the Army/Navy /Airforce Club, Glace Bay.

While serving his country he met the love of his life, Bertha. They went on to spend 59 loving years together, raising their children and helping anyone in need. In his earlier years Teddy loved spending time in Loch Lomond, hunting and fishing with family and friends.

Teddy will be sadly missed by his son, Johnny, Ontario, daughters, Lorena Walsh, Marie (Wally) Szumilak, Halifax, Jeannie (Peter) Caldwell, Ontario, Darlene Wentzell, Laura Lea (Glenn) Sudworth, Glace Bay, special son, Mark (Josephine) Gilmet, Montreal, also Lunda (Junior) Travis and especially a granddaughter near and dear to his heart, Eugenia (Brad) Boeda.

Also surviving are his grandchildren, whom he loved dearly, Carrie Ann, Michael, Ashley, Danielle, Melvin, Devin, Erica, Erin, Elysia and Glenn, along with his great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, his devoted caregiver prior to entering Taigh Na Mara, Nancy Morrison, sister in law, Dolly Saccary and special friend, Marg LeDrew.

Teddy was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Besides his parents and wife, Teddy was predeceased by his daughter, Sheila, grandson, Cahun, son in law, Pat Walsh, sisters, Genevieve, Pearl, Muir, Renie, Cedes, Chris and brothers, Neil, Adrian, Angus, Mose and John.

Special thanks to the ICU staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, especially, Dr. Klassen and nurse, Duncan. Teddy’s family will be forever grateful for the care that was provided to him while he was at Taigh Na Mara. Each of you treated him as if he was your own, “Da”. Willena and Linda, you were both his favourite.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation is Thursday evening, May 23rd from 7-9 p.m. followed by a funeral service on Friday at 11 a.m. and a reception, all in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Chapel and Reception Centre, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. Interment in St. Anne’s Cemetery. Fr. Duaine Devereaux presiding.
