VOKEY, Annie Laura (LeLievre)

Reserve Mines

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Annie Vokey, age 93, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on July 8, 2019.

Born in Belle Cote, Inverness Co. on July 6, 1926, Annie was the youngest of eleven children of Anslem and Catherine LeLievre and was the last surviving member of this family.

Annie moved to Glace Bay in 1946 and married the love of her life, Ernie Vokey, in February 1947. Shortly afterward they moved to Reserve Mines where they resided for over 40 years raising their family. Annie always considered Reserve Mines her home. Most recently, Annie had been a resident of Seaview Manor in Glace Bay and prior to that resided at Williston House in Sydney. Annie was a woman with strong faith and her prayers of being reunited with Ernie have finally been answered.

Annie was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Reserve Mines for over 70 years and was active in years past in the CWL. Both she and Ernie were members of the Reserve Mines Pensioners Club as well as the Glace Bay Pensioners Club. As an extremely devoted mother, Annie’s primary role in life was a homemaker and caring for her children. For seven years prior to Ernie’s retirement as Vice President of Barrington and Vokey Ltd., Annie joined her husband at “the shop” as receptionist, a new role that she thoroughly enjoyed. In retirement, they both enjoyed travelling to visit their children and grandchildren and especially enjoyed the trips to Florida with Elaine and David.

Annie was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Ernie, in 2002 and is survived by daughters, Karen (Ron) Gillis, Gananoque On., Elaine (David) Allen, Lunenburg, NS, Yvonne (Richard) LeBlanc, Hamilton, ON, Brenda (Arthur) Lewis, Ancaster, ON and one son, Bill (Michelle), Sydney, NS. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Dennis (Jade) Gillis, Ernie (Madelaine) Gillis, Annette Gillis, Lisa (Tom) Tays,  Laura Allen, Amanda Leblanc (Jim Mullan), Daniel (Shobani) LeBlanc, Mitchell Lewis,  Cynthia Vokey (Johnathan Passerini) and Andrea Vokey. She is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Ryan and Charlotte Tays and Alec LeBlanc.

Visitation will be held Tuesday evening, July 16, from 6-9 pm at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, and Reception Centre, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, July 17, at 11 am in St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines, with Father Bedford Doucette officiating.A Reception will take place following the mass in the parish hall. Interment will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Seaview Manor Foundation, St. Joseph’s Cemetery fund or a charity of choice.
