Obituary of Jessie Vivian Hillier, New Waterford

It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Jessie Vivian Hillier (Penney) on November 30, 2019, who passed away peacefully at the age of 85 at Alderwood Guest Home in Baddeck with her sister June by her side.

She was the daughter of the late Stanley and Caroline Penney (Pieroway).

Jessie was a devoted congregant at All Saints Memorial Church, New Waterford and was a faithful member of the church choir for more than 50 years. She was involved in the Anglican Young People's Association as a young woman where she made lifelong friends. She later taught Girl Guides as well as Sunday School. She was secretary-treasurer of the Ladies Guild and a member of the Anglican Church Women for several decades.

Jessie was a kind and gentle soul who lived simply. She loved to laugh and entertained visitors at Alderwood with stories from her past, especially her camping days at Camp Bretondean in Mira. Dementia may have stolen memories of her present-day activities, but she remembered, in detail, cherished moments of her past as well as the names of family and friends.

Jessie is survived by her sons, Stanley (Vicky) and Charles; sisters June, Joyce and Ivy; brother, Stanley Junior (Eileen) and son-in-law, James Kelly; grandchildren, Jillian, Scott (Ashley), Jonathan, Katie and Steven; five great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Charles, partner, Eric Rose, brothers, Charlie, Walter in infancy, Cecil and daughter, April.

A visitation will be held at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford on Thursday, December 5 from 6-9 p.m. A funeral service will take place on Friday, December 6 at 2 p.m. in All Saints Memorial Church, New Waterford, with Rev. Dorothy Miller officiating. Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery with a luncheon to follow in the Church Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to All Saints Memorial Church.
