James “Bones” Frederick MacKinnon

 Sydney / Glace Bay

 

It is with great sadness that we, the family of James ‘Bones’ MacKinnon age 66, announce his passing on Dec 8, 2019 at home in Cape Breton.

Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Hugh MacKinnon and Rita (Brown).

Jimmy was a brilliant electrician by trade and by heart and was a very proud member of his Union, Local 1852.  Although not a mechanic by trade, he would “drop an engine in anything”.  In his earlier years he enjoyed drag racing  at the tracks in PEI & working in the pits at the races.  He was a motorcycle enthusiast and took great pride in his 1978 Triumph Tiger.

Jimmy had a passion for dogs and loved his purebred Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, which he bred & showed.

He was a member of the Glace Bay Militia and spent time in Gagetown.  Jimmy had fond memories of all his summers spent as a child in the family bungalow ‘Out on the Mira’.

Besides his parents he was predeceased by his step dad, Edwin MacDonald, nephew , Dale MacKinnon-Greer and dear brother in-law, Dr. William Snow.

Jimmy is survived by his son, James (Nevanna), daughter , Joanne Guthrie (Adam); sisters ,Carolyn Snow , Diana MacKinnon-Furlong (Gerry); brothers ,William (Bev) of Edmonton and Edwin MacDonald (Jerry) of NL. 

He is also survived by 7 grand children, Michaela, Sarah, Zoe, Olivia, Mia, Ben and Elizabeth as well as several nieces and nephews, also the mother of his children, Dorothy Mailman.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation is Friday, December 13th from 7-9 pm followed by a funeral service on Saturday at 11 am and a reception, all in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Chapel & Reception Centre, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. Rev. Ralph Johnston officiating. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery.
