Glenn Hopkins, Port Morien

Obituary of Glenn Kenney Hopkins, Port Morien

It's with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear husband, father and “Gramp” at home on December 29, 2019. Born on November 13, 1932 in Doctor's Cove, Shelburne Co., Glenn was the son of the late Herbert and Edith (Kenney) Hopkins. Glenn came to Port Morien in the 50's to be a part of the family business, H. Hopkins Ltd., where he spent his entire working life. He bought lobsters in Newfoundland for many years where he made a wide circle of friends. Later on in his career, he continued with the operations in Glace Bay, Louisbourg and Port Morien. In his youth, Glenn played hockey on his school team at King’s - Edgehill. Many years later, he took on the role of 'Hockey Gramp', chauffeuring to early morning practices and games. His favourite hockey memories were at the rink with Al and Glen. He is survived by his wife, Josephine 'Dodo' (MacIntosh), children, Blair (Nancy), Nancy (Ken), Glenna (Winston) and Trevor. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kenny (Kellie), Angela, Katherine (Dennis), Dennis (Amanda), Leah (Edward), Glen (Andrea), Ian (Sharon), Danielle (Tyler), Alex and Brett and his great grandchildren, Carson, Bethany, Ben, Harper, Nora and chosen great grandchildren, Kylie, Mason and Tyler. He is also survived by his sister, Louise and sisters-in law, Marion and Florence as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, sister, Katherine and brothers, Cliff, Brad, Bill and Eddie. Affectionately known as 'Gramp', he made his way through life in an understated yet impactful way. His kind nature was shared with many over the years and also extended to all creatures great and small. He continually demonstrated his love and his pride for his family and he was happiest when surrounded by them. He will be deeply missed. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Saturday morning, January 4th, 2020 from 10 am until the time of the service at 11am, followed by a reception, all in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Chapel & Reception Centre, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. Interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Port Morien. Rev. Dorothy Miller officiating.
