Obituary of Shepherd Fallis Grant

It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of our loving husband, father, brother, uncle and friend. "Shep" passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Friday, September 23, 2016, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Glace Bay, August 9, 1938, he was the son of the late Walter and Helen (Thompson) Grant of Reserve Street. Shep was a longtime member of the Glace Bay Baptist Church; in his younger years he was a deacon and was active in Island-wide men’s ministry, and maintained a quiet, thoughtful Christian faith. For an impressive 42 years, he worked at the Cape Breton Post, mostly as an advertising salesman. He loved the one-on-one contact with business owners, many of whom became good friends. Shep and Doris recently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary. This past summer he enjoyed special visits with his granddaughters and his many trips to Tim Horton's with his sisters Patsy and Helen. He will be dearly missed by loving wife, Doris (Murley) Grant; two sons, Keith (Joy), Fredericton, and Kevin (Michelle), Lockeport; sisters Harriett, Halifax, Patsy, and Helen, both of Glace Bay; grandchildren, Abigail, Lily, Hannah, and Isabelle, sister-in-law Doris Grant, Eastern Passage; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Besides his parents, Shep was also predeceased by brothers Earle and Jack; sisters Anna Fletcher and Ruth Frost; brothers-in-law Allan Frost and Russell Fletcher, and sister-in-law Mary Grant. Visitation for Shep will be held today, Monday, September 26, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm, at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. The funeral service, shared by Rev. Allan MacLellan and Pastor Elizabeth Hazelhurst, will be 11 am Tuesday, September 27, 2016 in the Glace Bay Baptist Church, 229 York St., Glace Bay. All are welcomed to a reception in the church hall immediately following the service to share a light lunch, memories, and stories with Shep’s family. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Shep’s memory may be made to the Glace Bay Baptist Church or to a charity of one’s choice.
