Obituary of Bernice (MacPhee) Nickituk, G.B.

Bernice Margaret “Niecie” (MacPhee) Nickituk, age 81 passed away on Sunday, March 1st, 2020 at the An Cala Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Catherine (MacDonald) MacPhee. In her early years, Bernice was employed at MacIntosh’s Grocery Store in Glace Bay. After she had children, she devoted her life to raising them. She was a beautiful mother, known for her caring and compassionate manner, always there to lend a helping hand. Bernice loved playing cards, doing puzzles and watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. She is survived by her two daughters, Diane (Mike) MacIntyre, Jennifer (Marcus), two sons, Paul (Arlene), Michael (Eleni), two sisters, Joan (Eric) Parsons, Maureen Robertson and one brother, Kelly (Anne) MacPhee. Also surviving are Bernice’s four grandchildren, Maya, Ethan, Emma, Olivia, nieces, nephews and special niece, Cathy Maroun, sister in law, Diane Dimitropoulos and extended family, Ken and Barb O’Neill and their sons. Besides her parents, Bernice was predeceased by her husband, Peter Nickituk, two brothers, Walter and Garfield MacPhee, three sisters, Shirley MacMullin, Florence Farrell, Cleo Tobin and her father and mother in law, Mike and Mary Nickituk. Visitation is Wednesday evening, March 4th from 6-9 pm in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Chapel & Reception Center, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. The funeral mass officiated by Fr. Duaine Devereaux and Fr. Patrick O’Neill will be held on Thursday at 10 am in St. Anne’s Church followed by a reception in the church foyer. Cremation will take place after the mass with burial at a later date in St. John’s Cemetery, Wallace Rd, Glace Bay. Memorial donations in memory of Bernice may be made to the An Cala Palliative Care Unit, CBRH, Sydney or a charity of one’s choice.
