Obituary of Melvin Shaw, Glace Bay

We regret to announce the peaceful passing of my husband, our father, grandfather and great grandfather, Melvin Alphonse Shaw, age 84 on Friday, March 13th, 2020 at the Glace Bay Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Wilfred and Annie (Dicks) Shaw. Melvin was a very family orientated man. He loved his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren immensely. Each and every one of them was very special in his eyes. He was known as, “Poppy” by many people. The fishing industry was a very large part of Melvin’s life. He worked for Highland Fisheries for most of his career; until he was forced into early retirement due to physical injuries. He enjoyed a love of camping and spent many summers in Mira Park and Ben Eoin campgrounds surrounded by his family. Melvin was also a great handyman. There was very little he could not fix. He will be sadly missed. Melvin is survived by his wife of 62 years, Myrna (Currie) Shaw, his four children and their families, son, Melvin Jr. (Ann), and their children, Jonathon (Josee), Blair (Pat), son, Gerard (Sandra) and their children, Tyler (Hilary), Logan (Kelsey), daughter, Heather (Terry) and their children, Andrew (Jenny), Adam (Jessica), son, JB (Terry) and daughter, Jami (Brendan). He is also survived by his 6 great grandchildren, Mikkel, Elanie, Gunnar, Kaia, Millie and Luca., siblings, Wilfred “Boops”, Janette, Theresa, special sister in law, Alma (Ade) Fowler and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Melvin was predeceased by siblings, Fabian, Gerald, Tom, Richard, Monnie, Marie and Helen. As per Melvin’s wishes, there will be no visitation or public service. Cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held at a later date. Donations in memory of Melvin may be made to the NS Heart & Stroke Foundation.
