Obituary of Marie Rose Petrie

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Marie Rose Petrie, 85 of New Victoria, on October 6, 2016. Born in Sydney on May 10, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Rosa (Nowel) Briand. She is survived by her husband, Daniel (Dapper) and children Brian (Mary), New Victoria, Glen, Hamilton,Ont., Gary (Mary) Scotchtown, Dawne Marie (Kenny) McCarthy, St. Louis, Roselyn (Michael) MacLean, Halifax, Blair, Sydney, special 'adopted' son, Robert Durando, New Victoria; brother Lou Briand, Howie Centre. She has 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her daughter, Darlene, in infancy and grandson, Gary. Marie was a devoted member of the former St. Agnes Church, now the Parish of St. Leonard. She was a graduate of the Nursing program at New Waterford General Hospital. Marie was an avid gardener and member of the New Waterford Gardening Club. She was active in sports in her younger years playing badminton, performing yoga and swimming. She loved the outdoors and giving back to her community as evidenced by coordinating the Each One Teach One program in New Waterford that promoted adult literacy. She made frequent journeys to visit her children in their homes across Canada and the US and particularly enjoyed trips to Hawaii and the Caribbean. Our mother was a remarkable lady, very resourceful, responsible, energetic and strong willed. Visitation will be held Friday, October 7, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford.A funeral mass will be celebrated by Father Ray Huntley on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at 10 am in St. Leonard’s Church, Mount Carmel Avenue, New Waterford. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney, with a reception to follow at St. Leonard’s Parish Hall, Convent St, New Waterford.
