Obituary of Fred "Little Freddie" Dakin, Glace Bay

The family of Frederick J. Dakin, “Little Freddie”, age 76, are saddened to announce his passing on Monday, June 15th, 2020 at the Glace Bay Hospital, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Born in Glace Bay, Freddie was the son of the late Fred Dakin and Josie Peddle. Freddie worked in various establishments over the years, Riga’s Restaurant, Iggy’s Tavern, and Branch 3 Legion were some of them.He was also a member of RCL Branch 3 Legion. Freddie was well known and respected around the Glace Bay area and he was always willing to lend a hand whenever he was needed. He was a font of knowledge about Glace Bay, its’ people and its’ history and his passing will leave a void that can never be filled. He left us all too soon and he will always be loved and missed. We were blessed and forever grateful to have had such a kind and loving soul in our lives. Freddie is survived by five nieces, Darlene (who took care of Freddie until the end) and her husband Kevin Holloway, Grace (Peter Groom), Glenna Ferguson, Josephine “Sis” Harding, Catherine (Murray Ross),nephews, Kevin Ferguson, Greg (Ellen) Ferguson, special grandnephew, Forbes (Maureen) Harding, grand nephews, Lloyd (Kristyn) Holloway and Kirk (Ann) Holloway, special grandniece, Mary Ruth (Gervase) Chan, great grandniece, Lexi Holloway and three great grandnephews, Nate, Bryce and Cole Holloway and many more grandnieces and nephews. He will also be missed by his many friends, especially his neighbors at the McDonald Lane Senior Complex, and Tim Horton’s on Commercial Street. Besides his parents, Freddie was predeceased by his sisters, Linda Devison and Mary Ferguson, his nephew John Devison, special cousins, Johnny, Roy and Jim Ferguson. The family would like to thank Dr. MacLean, Dr. Kelly, Dr. M. Ellerker, Dr. Wong and the staff of the 3rd floor South Glace Bay General Hospital, and special thanks to Palliative Care. Cremation and Funeral Arrangements have been entrusted to VJ McGillivray Funeral Home, Cremation & Reception Center, Glace Bay. Due to Covid 19 there will be no visitation, a private family grave side service will take place at a later date in St. Anne’s Cemetery, Glace Bay.
