Johnena MacDonald, Dominion

Obituary of Johnena MacDonald, Dominion

It is with much sorrow we announce the passing of Johnena MacDonald, age 87 of Dominion. On Saturday, June 27th, 2020 the day before her birthday, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Sydney, she left us to join her family. Johnena was the last surviving child of the late Colin and Sarah “Sadie” (McNeil) MacDonald. Johnena was very talented. Those close to her were gifted with a hand-stitched quilt that contained a blessed medal and a loonie. You had to feel around for them, sewn in some secret part of the quilt. “You’ll never be broke, and you’ll never be alone.” This talent was passed on to her niece and Godchild, Valerie. Although Johnena never married, she had her own special family. She had the pleasure of being both Housekeeper and friend to the two little girls of the Stephenson family. They formed a bond that lasted until the end. Joanne and Mary Anita both married and started their own families. Johnena’s love for their children was as strong as the relationship she had with their moms. Johnena is survived by sisters-in-law, Betty, (wife of Joe), and Marie, (wife of Frankie). She is also survived by many nieces and nephews who she cared for dearly. She will be sorely missed by her loving niece, Valerie Campbell (Barrie) and the girls she babysat for many years, Joanne Gillis (Fred) and Mary Anita McCormack (Allen) and their children. She was a faithful member of the former Parish of Saint Eugene, Dominion and was predeceased by sisters, Mary (Neilie, deceased), Anne, Margaret “Maggie”, brothers, Dan “Frecks”, Charlie (Maureen, deceased), Joe (Betty), Colin “Frankie” (Marie) and John “Pinkie”. The family would like to mention the staff of “St. Anne's”, 3rd floor, Harbourstone Enhanced Care. They cared for Johnena with compassion and professionalism, treating her like part of their family. Thank you. Cremation has taken place under the direction V.J. McGillivray Chapel, Cremation & Reception Center,16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay, NS. A private interment will be held in St. Eugene’s Cemetery, Dominion. On line condolences to the family can be expressed at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca
