I like so many others will miss Uncle Jimmy. When I reflect on my childhood memories of New Waterford, Big Jimmy looms large. As others have correctly stated, he was very funny, a great historian, kind person and a great storyteller. As a kid he teased me relentlessly... and I loved every minute of it!
I am truly saddened by his passing but grateful for all the wonderful memories. My best to Pearl and the family.

When my Dad(Duncan Gillis) went into the nursing home back in 2006, I would always have my camera with me to take photos of my Dad and to have my cell phone at hand, for Uncle Jimmy to talk to his loving brother. Uncle Jimmy loved receiving the photos in the mail, but most important loved talking to his brother over the phone! I would get my Dad to sing a song, so Jimmy could hear him and he was so amazed! Uncle Jimmy would always say to me. " Your Dad was my hero and he was such a smart man"! My Mom & I visited Jimmy and his wife Pearl back in October of 2001 and we had such a wonderful visit! The jokes he would say, the stories he would tell and the amazing work he would be building in his kitchen! I said to Jimmy, " You are such a crafty Uncle and you are my Dad's hero too"! I was always in contact with Jimmy with regarding my Dad and would always send him an Anniversary card, Birthday/Christmas cards and phone calls. I'm sure going to miss those great conversations that we had and of course I will miss you so very much!! Thank you for the wonderful memories Uncle Jimmy, I will always keep them close to my heart! Fly high like the angels and shine like the stars. You will always remain, in each one of my family's hearts!! My condolences to my Aunt Pearl and my loving cousins. Your Father was a wonderful man!! R.I.P Uncle Jimmy...your loving brother, my 3 older brothers, myself and my loving Mother(who died in 2012) will miss you so very, very much!! Love Duncan, Al, Don, Steve, Anne Gillis. Give my Mom a big hug for me!! xoxoxoxoxoxo

I never got to meet him in person, but he loved jokes and we would share them back and forth. We spoke a few times and emailed so got to know each other a little. We would have gotten along very well! Resting in peace is definitely in the cards as he was a good man.

My father Duncan is Jimmy’s older brother. He is turning 97 in a few days and the best way to remind him of his prime is to help him recall the names of his Ma, Da, brothers and sisters. It really lights my dad up. He once told me Jimmy was “like the salt of the earth” and, although I only met with my uncle a few times, I was deeply honoured to know he was my dad’s brother. He was unforgettably welcoming and kind during a visit Duncan and I had with him in New Waterford about 20 years ago. A real highlight of the trip for me.
Love to my extended NS family at this time.

So sorry to read of Jimmy's passing. He was such a wonderful person. I have so many fond memories of Jimmy from his time at my parents' service station and from Ben Eoin Beach when he and Pearl would have their trailer near ours and he'd visit. He had so many great stories to tell. He had a kind word to say about everyone. God really did break the mold when He made Jimmy. Wayne and Gillis family you are in our thoughts and prayers. Ralph, Bernadette, and Connor.

I am at a loss for words to try to explain jimmys legacy to me and everyone but here’s my best, Uncle jimmy was not my (UNC) as I called him he was my grand uncle but so much more . He was my grandfathers brother and they all lived in the same yard where I spent most of my child hood. My uncles, aunts and my cousins were my brothers and sisters , you see I was an only child so I had all those boys and girls as my own all 14 of them. When my grandfather and grandmother passed away (UNC) became my fill in grandfather in my eyes, I would visit regularly and big jimmy was always there when ya needed him ( if he wasn’t running the roads with pearl hanging out up Tim’s for there evening coffee) for anything or nothing he was just there for a talk or just to listen. I will miss your wisdom and your silly jokes about chasing pearl around the kitchen in her house dress. Love you UNC say hello to nana and papa for me, you will be missed by all who knew you. Another little piece of my heart is in heaven.......God bless my deepest condolences to Aunt Pearl and all my cousins

Jimmy was such a gentleman, worked with Dad at the Heavy Water Plant. We were then blessed to have him at the service station for years along with all his children. Dad, Mom & All of Us loved him so much. Jimmy was so kind to all of us as children. He’ll leave a space no other can fill. Love Ya “Uncle Jimmy”
