Obituary of Edna (McGean)Buchanan, Glace Bay, RN, BSW

With deep sadness, the family announces the sudden and unexpected passing of Edna (McGean) Buchanan RN, BSW on Wednesday, August 26, at the QE II Hospital in Halifax. Born November 26, 1935, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Agnes (MacLeod) McGean. Edna graduated from the General Hospital School of Nursing in 1956. She nursed briefly in Chicago but spent most of her working life at Bay Medical Clinic on Main St. She then obtained her Bachelor of Social Work and finished her career at Town House and the Glace Bay Hospital on South Street. In her retirement years, Edna was an accomplished weaver, rug hooker and quilt maker. Edna was a life-long member of Warden United Church and served as church Treasurer for many years. Edna is survived by her youngest son, Lorne (Brenda Rafuse) Buchanan of Halifax; sister, Anna (McGean) Boldt of Grimsby, Ont.; daughter-in-law , Karen (Snow) Buchanan; grandchildren, Laura and Lindsay Buchanan, Christopher, Liam and Jena-Leigh Buchanan, and Hannah and Mia Buchanan; great-grandchildren, Breton and Owen Buchanan; brother-in-law, Edward “Eddy” (Alma) Buchanan and sister-in-law, Shirley Buchanan; fourteen nieces and nephews; and long-time friend June Peck. Besides her parents, Edna was pre-deceased by her husband, James ”Jimmy” Buchanan; sons, Bruce Buchanan and Ian Buchanan; sister, Norma (McGean) MacDonald; her uncle, Bill MacLeod, who was a surrogate father after the early death of John McGean; seventeen brother and sisters-in-law; five nieces and nephews; and life-long friend Barbara Ross. The family would like to thank the First Responders and the doctors, nurses and technicians at the QE II Hospital for the kindness and service shown to Edna during her brief hospitalization. Visitation will take place on Sunday, August 30th, 2020 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the V. J. McGillivray Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. A Celebration of Edna’s life will take place at Warden United Church on Monday, August 31st at 11 am with Rev. Alison Etter officiating. Interment will take place beside her husband and son in Greenwood Cemetery, Glace Bay. Family flowers only. Memorials may be made to Warden United Church or a charity of choice.
