Obituary of Gerard 'Gar' MacPhee
It is with great sadness we, the family, announce the passing of Gerard 'Gar' MacPhee, 62, of New Waterford on Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital with his loving family by his side.
Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late Douglas and Hannah (Gaulton) MacPhee.
Gerard was a member of the former St. Agnes Church, currently the Parish Church of St. Leonard. He was a coal miner for 26 years working in Lingan, Phalen and Prince Mines. He truly enjoyed fishing and hunting at Victoria Bridge in Upper Grand Mira. He will be missed by all.
Surviving are his wife, Linda; son, Doug (Lisa) MacPhee, River Ryan; sisters, Margaret (Lorway) Vardy, New Waterford, Liz (Hugh) MacLean, Sydney; brothers, Charlie (Catherine), New Waterford, Martin (Kay), New Victoria, Billy (Debbie), Scarborough, Ont.; one grandchild, Bradley; many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Gerard was predeceased by brothers Edward and John.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, Oct. 23, 2016 from 6-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will take place Monday, October 24, 2016 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Father Norman MacPhee officiating. Cremation will follow with burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery, New Victoria, at a later date. Following the funeral mass there will be a luncheon at St. Leonard's Parish Hall on Convent Street.
