Obituary of Viola Turnbull, Birch Grove

Viola Turnbull, age 96 of the Cove Guest Home passed away on Tuesday, November 10th, 2020 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney with her family by her side. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Freda (Frank) MacDonald. Viola devoted her entire life to raising her children and working alongside her husband, Nelson on their family farm on Broughton Road. She was a member of MacKay Memorial Church, Birch Grove where she was treasurer for 34 years. Viola loved crocheting, knitting mittens for the Salvation Army and making quilts for her family. She had a passion for gardening and loved her forty African violets. She was active in the Birch Grove Recreation Centre and truly enjoyed playing bingo and cards. Viola will be sadly missed by her daughters, Lorraine Burrows (George-deceased), Birch Grove, Muriel (John) Fortune, Reserve and her son, David (Audrey) Turnbull, Broughton Road. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Nancy, Terry (Dawn), Greg (Janet), Steven (Jenny), Amanda (Peter), great grandchildren, Billy, Nicky, Christopher, Jayden, Addison, Tucker, Isabelle and great great grandchildren, Callie and Ava, sisters, Rita and Virginia and her brother, Douglas. Besides her mother, Viola was predeceased by her husband, Nelson Turnbull in the year 2000, son in law, George, sisters, Mary and Evelyn, brothers, Alfred and Ches. Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 15th, 2020 from 2-4, 7- 9 pm in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. The funeral service, officiated by Rev. Bob Biggar is Monday at 11 am in the funeral home chapel. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.
