Obituary of Catherine "Deats" Buchanan, Gardiner Mines
Catherine B. (Burke) “Deats “ Buchanan
Gardiner Mines
January 4, 1932 - December 11, 2020
With sadness and heavy hearts, we announce that our Mom, Catherine Bernardita (Burke) Buchanan has passed away peacefully on, Friday, December 11, 2020.
Born and raised in Lingan, NS on January 4, 1932, Deats, as she was known, was the daughter of the late Barney and Melvina (Kelly) Burke.
On August 10, 1954, Deats married her husband, Gordon (Gordie) and together they built a loving home in Gardiner Mines where they raised their family of six children. They will be remembered skating and socializing at the local outdoor rinks, dance halls and into retirement at the Seniors Pensioners dances. They enjoyed gatherings of any kind with lots of music, laughs and friendships. Mom enjoyed strolling through the mall, Christmas shopping all year long, going to card games and she was a member of several card groups over the years. She especially enjoyed her Sunday night game with her Lingan family and friends which she did for over 40 years.
A stay-at-home Mom and devoted wife, Mom was happiest when she was surrounded by her children, her grandchildren and cherished her quiet times with Dad. A member of the former St. James Parish, Mom’s life was guided by her Faith, her adoration to St Anne and her love for her family. After losing her husband and her two sons, life was never quite the same. She missed them terribly. Even though life had changed for her, she kept our family traditions and had Sunday dinners each week with her children and grandchildren. She would never miss an opportunity for us to gather; whatever the occasion. As a loving and kind Mom, Nanny and Great-Grand Nanny she lovingly cared for her family and her home.
Surviving are her children, Karen (Kevin Black); Paula (John Weatherby); Colin (Debbie); and Kelly (Troy Baldwin). Nanny’s greatest joy was found in her grandchildren, Chantel; Melissa and Jeremy; Bethany and Cale and Kayla and Breanna; her great-grandchildren, Grayson, and Savanna. Also surviving are her daughters-in-law, Cheryl, and Rosemary. She is also survived by her brother, Al “Brother” (Verna).
Besides her parents, Deats was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Gordon; (May, 2009) her cherished sons; Blair (June, 2013); and Darren (May, 2009) and her sister, Elaine (husband Hughie) Morrison.
We would like to thank the staff at Harbourstone Enhanced Care for the care they provided Mom when she sadly was no longer able to remain in her home.
Visitation is Tuesday, December 15, 2020 from 4 pm to 7 pm in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay.
The funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 16, 2020 at 11 am in Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport followed by interment in St. James Cemetery, Gardiner Mines with Fr. Dan Boudreau presiding.

Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same, but as God calls us one by one the chain will link again.
