Dear Theresa, Sean, Cliona and families: We want to express our sincerest condolences on Bob's passing. We are nieces of Dr Billy Nicholson. ( our mother was Catherine Nicholson, Annie's twin sister) We remembered how fond Uncle Billy was of Bob and so enjoyed his companionship and council. Many times we crossed paths at Billy's Sunday evening suppers, or celebrations for special events. I only remember Sean and Cliona as little children. How proud he would be of you both.
The obituary shares a valued life of community and family. may your good memories sustain you in this time. And to Theresa we are stretching our our arms to give you a big" Nicholson Ervin" Hug
Sincerely Gail ( Ervin) Bob Muir and Linda (Ervin) Brennan Sheppard

In loving memory of Uncle Bob from Sinead and Chris. We remember the many good times we had in Bob and Teresa's company with much love and affection. From Mum and Dad's 70th rescuing bottles of red wine to the weekend in New York for their anniversary - which included a white knuckle cab ride to Newark airport. We loved our trip to Glace Bay in 2016 - Chris' first lobster dinner with Bob, Teresa, Cliona and the Guys and flying kites on the beach (well at least trying to!). We loved listening to his stories and debating current affairs. Remembering a perfect host and a kind and funny uncle. Sending our love and condolences to Teresa, Sean, Cliona, and Amy. This Good Man was my Mothers doctor for as long s I can remember. Dr O'Brian was also very kind to my Dad and myself when we took mom for appointments.
He was known to take her by the hand and call her "BooBoo" and smile at her with that lovable grin.
Needless to say that we were all shocked and saddened to hear of his passing.
From our family to yours we wish to offer our deepest condolences in this difficult time.

Bob was a friend of my parents. I knew him as a child growing up. When I close my eyes and remember Bob, my memories of him are full of big smiles and laughs and kindness. One of the first memories I have of him was on Easter Day in Nova Scotia at the Banville's house for dinner (I was quite young). I met him and his eyes crinkled when he smiled and he was so gentle. It eased my shyness. He bought me the cutest Easter bunny and he didn’t even know me and I thought that was so nice. I still remember that moment because of his lovely demeanor on that day and through the years of knowing him, my experiences with him were the same as that first moment. He was such a lovely, kind and gentle man.
My brother Robert (who Bob generously brought along to sail across the Atlantic with him) and I were always brought along to all the rowdy dinner parties the O'Briens would have. There was much laughter and such fun had by everyone. Bob made an impact on many. He lives on in our hearts and through our memories.
Teresa and family, I am very sorry for your huge loss. May your many memories of him bring you comfort and heal your heart in the days and weeks ahead.
I am thinking of you.

Over the Christmas holidays I had some special chats and moments with Bob - he wanted to tell me things, tell me how he felt about important times in his life, and I was touched he wanted to do that. I felt that we shared a wish to tell each other what had happened to us in our lives, and how we felt unsure about what to think or how to feel about it. And as with many visits, I won’t forget how Bob stood in the kitchen with G&T in hand and looked up at the ceiling while he asked a genuinely interested (or a twinkling, teasing) question about some part of my research, or about London or Vancouver or Suffolk, or about — god forbid — Marxism.
Bob, I knew you for 9 years, nowhere near long enough, but I’ll always remember the love in your touch: how you’d affectionately squeeze my shoulder if I was sat at the kitchen table as you walked past; how you’d hold my head when we kissed goodbye; how you’d hold my arm so sturdily as you helped me onto Taharra, because you could tell I was nervous about falling overboard before I’d even got on the boat; how just a couple of months ago I *did* fall down Cliona’s stairs and landed on my arse, and you rushed down, checked my legs still worked, and then after a moment of panic, we just rested our heads on each other’s, both a bit drunk and sad because Sean and I were leaving the next day.
I’m so grateful I get to live my life with your beautiful son. In and around London we often say to each other, we’ve got to take Dad/Bob to this or that place. We won’t get to do that now, but we’ll go back to those places and talk about you. Thank you Bob, and dearest Teresa and my darling Cliona, for welcoming me into your kind, funny, clever, surprising family. What you all do for so many people around you is extraordinary, and I love you all.

Was sad to hear Bob’s passing. My condolences to his loving family. I have Wonderful memories of sailing with Bob as part of the crew across the Atlantic in 1984. When we made landfall off Ireland, Bob and Martin were up on the bow looking at their beloved homeland. Our destination as part of the Tall Ships Race was Liverpool Eng., but of course, they suggested a “wee stop at a fine pub” in Baltimore Ire. Four or five days later we finally arrived in Liverpool after a few unscheduled days in Ireland... It was an honour to sail with Bob and I wish him fair winds and following seas.

Teresa, Cliona and Sean,
It’s clear Bob was dearly loved and respected by so many people, not just for his professional ability but for his humanity and capacity to show caring to his patients. We also witnessed his wonderful nature, as he welcomed our daughter into your family, and saw that he had something to say to the world to try and make it a better place for all.
We are so sad we never got to do the things we hoped to do, to meet up again with Bob and you all. But we will meet, all of us, and Bob will be present, in the hearts and minds of all those who loved him. Our thoughts are with you.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Dr O'brien's passing. I was speechless at first, and couldn't believe it was true, but sadly it
is true. I Met Dr O'brien when I was pregnant with my first child and he has been my and my families doctor ever since, almost 37 years. He delivered my first two children, and was on track to deliver my third child, but had to leave for Ireland the morning I went into labor, his mother had passed away.
I don't know what it will be like to go to another doctor, whoever they will be will have huge boots to fill. I would like to thank Teresa, Sean and Cliona for sharing their husband and dad with all of us, his patients. I am sure there were many times when he left his family to help others, and he was the best.
I will miss his jokes, his stories, his compassion and so much more. There is now a huge hole in our community that Dr O'brien for so many years filled.
My heart felt and sincere condolances to you Teresa and your family
Rest in peace Dr O'brien, till we meet again ....

To The O'Brien Family,
I met Dr. O'Brien in 1979 as a young pharmaceutical representative, calling on him and Dr. Nicholson. He welcomed me and over the years we had some great conversations during my visits. His dedication to his patients and all people in the community was unmatched, and his true humanity shone everyday. I always looked forward to seeing him and ironically he was the last physician I spoke with before I retired from my career. He was good acquaintances with my colleague Mike DeWolfe as was Dr. Martin Brennan. God does not create many people like Bob. They are cherished angels to us all. May God's comfort be with all of you and in the days ahead as you cherish the memories, Time for Bob and Martin to set sail for the heavenly 7 seas!

Theresa, Sean & Cliona:
My sincerest and heartfelt condolences to you at this difficult time. May your memories carry you through, soothe your souls and bring you peace. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Dr. O'Brien I will miss you immensely. Your compassion, your ability to make one feel comfortable in any medical situation. I will miss our conversations about world tragedies/governments, your love of sailing, good music and of course our children. You always asked how my boys were. You were my doctor for nearly 40 years and delivered my two sons. The second birth had you on your toes and when all was good you put your hand on my shoulder and said "God is good". I will never forget that day. Yes God was but so were you. I can't seem to find the words to explain the void you leave, not to mention the extreme loss to our community. Thank you Dr. O'Brien for sharing your wonderful heart with us by means of your caring personality and devoted commitment. I hope the winds were fair on your journey home.
Rest in Peace my friend!!

I was heartbroken to hear of Dr. O’Brien’s passing. He was not only my Doctor but a friend as well. I’ve been with him for over 40 years and he delivered both my sons. Through good times and the bad time for me, he was there to listen. I have such great memories of him through his many stories of Ireland, sailing, travels and talking about his different adventures. Condolences to you Teresa, Sean and Cliona, no words can take away the hurt but know he was well loved and will be sadly missed.
RIP Dr. O’Brien,

Losing your doctor is bad regardless, but losing Dr. O'Brien seems much harder. Every appointment, every interaction, was always a pleasure. Not only did he deliver me, he helped me so many times through the years I've lost count. It's been a long time since a death has upset me like his. My heart felt condolences to Theresa, Cliona, and all of his family and friends. Dr. O'Brien will never be forgotten, and fondly remembered as a pillar of Glace Bay. May he rest in peace.

Dr. O'Brien,
To say he was a kindhearted, caring man was an understatement. He took great pride in helping his patients and caring for his community. Always a pleasure to see and to speak with, in any situation. I had the pleasure of knowing him as a patient for 29 years, my son for only a short 2 years and my mother was lucky enough to have known him for 40+ years. You will be missed by all. My deepest condolences to Theresa, your children and Crystal.

I am so sorry to hear about Dr O'Brien, he was my doctor for almost 40 years, and I will miss him greatly. He was a very good person as well as a great doctor, his kindness, thoughtfulness and his dedication to his patients , he was special, to me. Sometimes after he came back from a vacation, we would chat and he would tell me about it, I would make a funny remark and he would say " some people may say your a little crazy " and I would say, " you should know by now I am ", he would shake his head a smile. And once in awhile he would mention my brother Ricky, as Dr O' Brien was one of the doctors on call at the hospital when Ricky was brought in, and they tried to save him, that was over 37years ago, and Dr O'Brien never forgot that night. I would always ask him about his wife Theresa, and how she was doing, he would tell me and he always said that Theresa was a strong woman. My heart goes out to Theresa and her family, especially Theresa and all that she is facing now with all her other troubles. RIP Dr O'Brien, God knows how hard you worked and with all your personal troubles on your mind, You will be sadly missed by so many, tears still well up in my eyes when I think of you and what we have all lost, especially your family. My thoughts and prayers to Theresa and her family, God Bless you,
