some teachers pass along knowledge and learning to their students that takes years to bubble up to the surface. Mr. Bates was one of those who challenged us and opened our minds to new things... Sadly, only learned of his passing today...thanks for all that literature stuff..

The world has lost a great man and humanitarian. Maynard was my link between Ontario and Cape Breton since my brother Kevin passed. I'm grateful that my daughter Melodie and I got to visit with him in New Waterford when we passed through a couple of years ago.
I will miss our emails and updates.
My condolences Annette and Suzanne.

My sympathies to the family. He was my English teacher from 1980-83, and I think of him whenever the subjects of Chaucer, Steinbeck, or My Fair Lady come up. He was definitely one of my favourites.

My most profound and heartfelt sympathy to Annette, Suzanne and the Bates family on the passing of Maynard, a wonderful husband, father, and human being. I will always cherish the memories of visiting Annette and Maynard in their beautiful house on the ocean. Ardie and I always remarked on what a wonderful visit that was and how one day we would return. Unfortunately that never came to pass, although I do believe one day there will be a great happy reunion where all of us will be together, never to be parted again. To Annette and Suzanne, may you find strength in the days ahead, and joy and peace in the precious memories of life shared with your beloved Maynard. With love, Linda Ambrose-Bates (Montreal, Quebec)

Dear Annette, Suzanne and the entire Bates Family. Our sincere condolences on the loss of Maynard. We truly enjoyed our times spent with Maynard when visiting C.B.; he was a great story teller and so knowledgeable on so many subjects. When someone you love becomes a memory, that memory becomes a treasure. May you treasure all your memories of Maynard. Thinking of you during this difficult time.

I would like to offer condolences to Annette, Suzanne and Maynard’s siblings on his passing.
Maynard was one of our older cousins while growing up on Heelan Street. We always enjoyed his quiet friendliness, humour, and kindness. As a student at St. Agnes School, we remember his academic achievements and later when he graduated from St. FX with a BA "cum laude" !
In Maynard's retirement years at home in Cape Breton, we could always count on his interest and enthusiasm at family reunions, and we valued his participation and enjoyed his stories.
Maynard, in the words of the poet John O' Donohue… may there be a beautiful welcome for you in the home that you are going to.

I was a student at Liverpool Regional High School when Maynard began teaching. I had him for English in grade 10 and he was a breath of fresh air, a young teacher with interesting ideas and new ways to engage students. I remember his handouts, on Gestetner sheets, of song lyrics (like Richard Corey by Simon and Garfunkel) that he taught as poetry. His brother Leo was in Liverpool with him. Having him as a teacher made a great impression on me, and it is a testament to his success as an educator that I remember his classwork so vividly. I am so glad he had a full and rewarding life. With sympathy, Jill Hemeon Rafuse

Our deepest sympathies to Annette and Suzanne and the rest of the Bates and Timmons families. A donation has been made in Maynard's name. I remember when Maynard traveled to Xavier Junior College with my father in the early sixties, and I remember hearing stories of his time teaching in the North. Maynard will be missed and it is unfortunate that the grieving process is hampered by the Covid-19 protocols.
