I worked with Hugh in Ottawa at Linktek. I worked the front desk and he was always so kind and thoughtful towards me. One morning he saw that I came into work with very cold hands. I used to walk to work and the gloves I had weren’t very warm. He went out and bought me great quality Isotoner gloves! He surprised with this caring gesture and I have never forgotten it. He had a wonderful calm presence and this is just one snapshot of his kind character. We were sad when he left Linktek. I’m so deeply sorry for your loss.

I went to Central Elementary with Hugh(ie). My family moved away the summer after grade 6 and I never saw him again but I thought of him many times over the years. I always thought he would be very successful. I have many memories of him and his individuality, even as young as we were. My deepest condolences to you. ❤️

My deepest condolences to your family.
Hugh will always have a special place in my heart. I first met him at a lunch for a colleague who was leaving Linktek. Hugh had already moved to Toronto but happened to be visiting Ottawa and he attended the lunch. We started talking, clicked, and kept in touch. We shared a complicated friendship, on-and-off over the years. He loved to share his knowledge and experiences with the lucky few who called him friend. He took pride in being the perfect host for his visiting friends and knew of many specialty shops, dining venues and bars in Toronto. I cannot see or walk on Queen West and many blocks along Yonge Street without thinking fondly of Hugh. He will not be forgotten. Shine on and may you rest in peace.

My cousin Hughie had a talent for making people feel special. In a world where it’s far too easy to focus on ourselves — there’s something unique about someone who makes it a priority to truly see and acknowledge the people around them. The memories posted here on this page are a testament to the many lives Hughie has touched.
I remember my conversations with him; sadly too few and far between.
In our family we had been talking about him a lot lately. My son Michael is studying computer science at Dalhousie and many times we said we were going reach out and put them in touch.
You always think you will have time, until you don’t.
I think it’s important that when we loose someone we love, we don’t forget or move on, but rather we honour, we remember, and incorporate them into our lives in new ways. It’s in keeping their memories alive in our hearts and minds that helps us heal.
For this reason, The Hugh Young Memorial Scholarship is being established through Cape Breton University to honour Hughie’s memory.
Donations can be made to the fund by clicking the ‘Give’ button on the www.CBU.ca homepage, following the prompts, and typing Hugh’s name in the memory section. In this way his legacy lives on, supporting future students achieve their goals and improving the lives of others through technology.
Rest In Peace Hughie, you may be gone but you will never be forgotten. To Deli, Jean, and Dwayne, we are sending our love, prayers and our deepest condolences.

Dellie, Jean and Dwayne, my condolences.
I can't imagine how hard it must be for you to lose a son and brother at such a young age.
I met Hugh when he moved from Ottawa to join the company I worked at in Toronto. We soon became good friends. He introduced me to artists from the Maritimes and Cape Breton musicians in particular and we used to go see them when they came to Toronto. We had a lot fun.
I moved to the other side of the world in ’99 but we stayed in touch and always met up when I was back in Toronto visiting family. We’d just pick up where we'd left off. It was a highlight of every trip.
He was a true friend and I will miss him dearly.
Take care and look after each other.

I was sad to hear about Hugh's passing. Hugh was a quiet person at work during his many years at the City of Toronto. He was a deep thinker and didn't often care for a lot of small talk at work, although talking about the weather was a safe bet and would bring a smile to his face. Hugh enjoyed his booster juice so much that I wouldn't be surprised if he had shares in the company given for lunch he was often fisted with two large juice drinks :) He was however foremost dedicated to maintaining the underlying Uniface foundational code in the City's public works (e.g., waste collection, roads, traffic lights, sidewalks, bridges, tree maintenance, etc) Toronto Maintenance Management System (TMMS) and he had an exceptional knowledge of how the Uniface code and the TMMS system interoperated. He was well trusted by his TMMS colleagues and the management team in making good decisions about how best to support and enhance TMMS. Hugh's expertise will be missed. It would be nice one day to make a trip to New Watertown NS to get a better sense of Hugh's source of deep-rooted and very kind sense of humanity. My thoughts and prayers are with Hugh and his family. RIP Hugh. Regards, Rob Pearce (former manager)

To the family of Hughie my deepest condolences.
I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing. I met Hughie in grade 7 band class and maintained a friendship through to graduation. He was a good friend with a great wit. As happens after high school I lost touch with Hughie but thought of him often and planned to connect again. But I let life delay that and now I am truly sorry I dint get a chance to catch up. He was a kind and gentle soul and will be missed by many. Certainly by me.

Dellie, Jean and Dwayne. We are so sorry to hear of Hughie's passing. I remember him being the smartest guy I knew in school. I remember playing board games at my parents house when we grew up. Hughie and I celebrated our 50 th birthdays together. I was very lucky to do that. For some of us that is the last time we seen Hughie. It was a big family party. That is how I will remember Hughie, turning 50 and happy having fun seeing everyone again. He was a very nice guy. We will miss him. It is hard to believe he is in heaven. We will never forget him. I hope your sadness will be replaced with happy memories. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely,
Noreen, Hank and Melita Smith

I wish to offer condolences to Hughs parents and brother on the passing of a unique kind of guy, we think he is still young but I guess we all age as time passes. I first met Hughie (as we called him in school) in grade 7 or 8 at BEC. I recall in Physics class with teacher Gopal Mandaretta how he could understand the science of what was being taught , Hughie would explain it in laymans terms and then in the computer science class he would tell us how he could re program the schools data system. He was a quiet but super smart guy. It is hard imagine 36 years since graduation and have never seen him since then. Rest in Peace.

I am so sad to hear this news. Hugh was a friend back in the day that we were in our early 20s. Our gang back then had so much fun together. It would not have been the same without him around. So affable, funny, warm, sweet, a lover of great music and good times. I thought about him a lot over the years and even looked for him on Facebook to reconnect but could never find an account for him. He was always so giving of time, smiles and gifts! Back when I was in university studying Russian, he gave me a Russian looking ring for my birthday. I still have it and it has made me think of him many times over the years. I send my deepest condolences to Hugh’s parents and brother, cousins and closest friends. I am deeply sorry for your loss and will remember him fondly, always. Here are a few photos that I have from back in the day. Maddie

Hugh was a dear friend to me for many years. I met him when I was 20 years old, and despite living far apart and seeing each other rarely, we grew and maintained a wonderful friendship. Although not as often as we wanted to, we checked in with each other frequently. We had 24 years of hours long phone calls - talking about life, and joking around. I have never had a friend like Hugh, those phone calls showed his kindness and love through his attention and interest in the lives of others. He gave his entire self to our friendship, and I will cherish that forever.
Hugh was a gracious host and loved to take people to his favorite restaurant, Grazie. Everyone in the restaurant knew him by name and was happy to see him. He shared this fellowship each time I came to visit. A dessert to-go from Grazie was a treat to share with Hugh later.
Hugh also sent many gifts over the years, and in these last few years, gifts for our children. One of my favorites was a simple gift, a roll of bubble wrap with a note saying, “Happy Popping!”. Our children loved it so much, they jumped up and down on it, and popped it when watching scary movies to feel better. I once sent cookies, in their travel they were crushed. He called and said, “The cookies are crushed”, and I suspect he may have eaten them anyway.
Mr., Mrs. Young, and Dwayne, you have never met me, but your son means the world to me. I cherish every moment we have spent together.

My deepest condolences to your family.
I first met Hugh at UCCB in our data processing program, we were a small group and all became friends helping each other out and heading to Ottawa together our small group of Cape Bretoners off to the nations capital to work and have fun. Over those years we met great friends and had lots of fun and fond memories together. I lost touch when he moved to Toronto, but I often wondered how he was doing and that everything going well for him. He was a true friend to all who met him and he would do anything for you. It was a sad day when we found out that Hugh had passed and he will be missed by all those he touched in his life. I good soul taken from us too early.

Hughie was one of a kind. All of us central boys had our own unique friendship with Hughie. He was a true visionary even back in the early 70's when he would often say that he wanted to be a computer programmer. Sadly we all lost touch with him after graduation but the thought of "I wonder what Hughie is up to these days?" was always brought up when buddies chatted about the old days at central. Rest peacefully Hughie.
