Obituary of Mary Patricia "Trick" Martin, Gardiner Mines

Mary Patricia “Trick” Martin 7th May 1930 – 29th April 2021 Gardiner Mines It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother Mary Patricia “Trick” Martin, of Gardiner Mines. Patricia passed away peacefully on April 29th, 2021 in the palliative care unit at the Regional Hospital, Sydney, at the age of 90, just a week shy of her 91st birthday. Patricia was brought up in Dominion, the daughter of the late Leonard Nearing and Margaret (McDonald). She was always very active in her community and church, a member of the Altar Society and a singer in the St James church choir for over 50 years. Patricia also worked at the Gardiner Centre and later the old St. Joseph’s Hospital, Glace Bay. She loved to read, sing, dance and ice skate whenever she could. Patricia enjoyed nights out at the Casino with her girlfriends and loved ice cream and day trips in the car. She also loved watching her favourite hockey team the Pittsburg Penguins, especially Sidney Crosby. Above all she loved spending time with her family. She is survived by her loving children, the proud mother of Ruby (Robert), Eddie (Karen), Mary MacIsaac (John), George (Marg), Roy (Gerri), John (Danielle), and Charlene Guitard (Ron). Patricia will be sadly missed by her 15 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren as well as her sister, Ursula Finlayson, sister-in-law, Mary Nearing and her many nieces and nephews. Patricia was predeceased by her parents and loving husband “Charlie” Charles (February 5th, 1995) as well as siblings, “Gatha” Agatha, “Buddy” Richard and Frank. Mom has been entrusted to V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Glace Bay where cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation; a private ceremony will take place in St. James Cemetery, Gardiner Mines. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. We would like to thank the staff of Maple Hill Manor, New Waterford, where mom resided for the last four years. The love and support you showed our mother was greatly appreciated. Thanks to Greg McNeil for all of his encouraging words – he put a smile on mom’s face and earned the title of her gentleman caller.
