Obituary of John D. McDonald

MCDONALD, John D. "Tooster" Gardiner Mines / Glace Bay We the family regret to announce the sudden passing of our brother, John D. McDonald, age 76 on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at his residence in Glace Bay. Born and raised in Gardiner Mines, he was the son of the late John F. and Catherine (Pinksten) McDonald. John worked at No. 26 Colliery, retiring after 28 years. He was also a member of the Canadian Armed Forces for 6 years. He served with the Canadian Guards in Petawawa, Ontario and Germany with NATO. John was an Honour Guard on Parliament Hill, Ottawa as well as a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 3, Glace Bay and a member of the Army, Navy, Airforce Club on Minto Street. His interests included watching scary movies, playing pool, darts and going dancing. John was a lifelong Detroit Red Wings fan. John is survived by his three children, Chad, Jeannie, Adam and five grandchildren. Also surviving is his only sister, Laura Scheller (Brian Stanford), brothers, Bill (Wife, Verna-Deceased), Danny (Wife, Juliette), Reggie, Louie (Wife, Carol Ann) and several nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved. Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his ex –wife, Theresa and one brother, Stewart Daniel McDonald. Cremation has taken place. A funeral service, officiated by Rev. Vernon Reid will be held in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay on Monday, November 7, 2016 at 11 a.m. followed directly by a reception at the RCL Branch No. 3, Glace Bay. Interment will follow the next day. No flowers by request. Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice. On line condolences to the family can be expressed at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca
