Obituary of Irene Majorie MacIntosh

It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of our dear mother, nanny and great nanny Irene Marjorie (Wood) MacIntosh, age 92, on Friday, Oct 28, 2016 at Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay surrounded by her loving family. Born in Glace Bay, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family and the youngest daughter of the late Frederick and Mary Emeline (Cantwell) Wood. Irene was in the Royal Canadian Army during WWII and served at the Army Hospital in Halifax and then later at Victoria Park in Sydney. Irene was a stay at home mother who took great joy in looking after her family and home and later 3 of her grandsons baking Chocolate chip cookies for them and making their favorite lunches. She enjoyed visiting family and friends, reading, bingo, listening to country and western music on the radio and watching her favorite TV shows. While at Taigh Na Mara she also enjoyed joining in on their daily activities and could always be counted on to be there when there was musical entertainment. She especially enjoyed her time at the bungalow in Red Islands where she loved to spend time with her family swimming, playing board games and having bonfires. Irene is survived by her son Bill (Paula) Wood (Belmont, NS) and daughter Barbara (Shaun) O'Neill (Ben Eoin), her grandchildren,Angela (Mark Morison) Wood, Bill (Michelle) Wood, Alana (Jim) Rushton, Karen (Brett) Phinney, John Paul (Sarah) Wood, Leanne (Kristen) Fisher, Felicia (Sam Foster) Romans, Shaun E. (Yolande Comeau) O'Neill, George (Kendra) O'Neill and Ian (Kelly) O'Neill and her special great-grandchildren Ben and Joseph Wood, Matthew, Lucas and Katelyn Rushton, India Rose Fisher, Matthew and Michael Foster, Zander Comeau, Nathalie and Liam O'Neill, Logan Marcolli, Chase and Colton O'Neill and baby to be O'Neill. Irene is survived by her sister in law, Barbara (Mike) Mercer, brothers-in-law James (Anne) MacIntosh (River Denys), Eugene Burkhart (Langley, BC), God daughter and niece Irene Byrne, special friend and niece Vivian McNeil and her many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Neil (Tosh) and brothers, Frederick 'Teddy'(late Lottie Turner), Percy, Herbert, Lewis (late Mary MacLeod) and Allister (late Emma Poirier); sisters Freida (late Ralph) Ueberschlag, Vivian (late Percy) Brewer, Eileen Burkhart, Dorothy (late James) MacKenzie, twin sister Iris (late Bill) Fraser and nephews Al Byrne, David Milley and nieces Beryl Milley and Donna Brewer. The family would like to say a special Thank You to the nursing and other staff of Taigh Na Mara, for the special care and attention given to our Mom during her 3 years there. Also sincere thanks to Dr Mac Lean and the nursing staffs of 3 South and 3 West of the Glace Bay Hospital for their excellent care during her stay there. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. The funeral service officiated by Rev. Allan MacLellan will take place in St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Glace Bay on Monday at 2 p.m. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
