Obituary of Michael Meechan, Glace Bay

With saddened hearts, our family announces the sudden passing of Michael J. Meechan at age 75, who passed peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney on October 6th, 2021 surrounded by loving family members. Born in Glace Bay on February 9, 1946, he was the son of the late Michael Meechan Sr. and Vera (MacDonald) Meechan. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, uncle and good friend. Michael was retired from MT&T, a Telecommunications Pioneer, and participated in many organizations in his community throughout his lifetime. He loved to travel, spend time at his cottage with family and friends, a good meal, music and a few laughs. He is survived by his son, Brian Meechan, daughter, Trina (Scott) Russell, his grandson, Daniel Russell, his brother, Vincent Meechan (Marie), and his sister, Margaret Ann (MacDonald) Green (Steven), brothers-in-law, James (Diane) Denny, David (Gina) Denny, Michael Denny, sisters-in-law, Tillie (Bobby) Morrison, Lonnie Denny, Mary-Marilyn (Maurice) Laurin, and Rita (Jack) Hurst, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his wife of 53 years, Gail (Denny) Meechan, his parents, his in-laws, the late James Denny and Dora (LeClair) Denny, his brother, Howard Meechan, his sisters-in-law, Arlette (Omar) Sloan, Ann (Denny) Loggie, and Jean (Denny) Ferguson. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of VJ McGillivray Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, October 13th, 2021 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. The Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 AM on Thursday, October 14th at St. Anne’s Church, 695 Main St, Glace Bay, Father Duaine Devereaux officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Covid protocol (masks and proof of vaccination) apply at the funeral home and church.
