Obituary of Alice Marie Leadbeater, New Waterford

It is with sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Alice Marie Leadbeater, 90, on Friday, October 22, 2021 at home. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late John and Catherine MacDonald . Alice was known as the “Neighbourhood Mom” and “Nanny” to many. She always made herself available for babysitting and helped several foster kids by taking them into her home. She was truly a special lady, who showed such kindness to everyone she met. Alice volunteered with Combined Christmas Giving and was a Brownie and Girl Guide Leader. Alice loved to shop and play bingo in her spare time. Surviving are daughters, Nancy (Danny) McGillivray, River Ryan, Kerry, Toronto; sons, Joey, Gary, both of Lower Sackville, Wendell (Gary) Toronto; sister, Barbara, Ontario and cousin, Shirley Ruelland who was more like a sister to her; grandchildren, Adam (Sasha), Morgan (Matt), Madison, Marley, Austin and Payton, and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, John Leadbeater; son, David in infancy; brothers, Phillip and Johnny; sister, Lila and several in-laws. We would like to thank New Waterford Homecare (her “little ladies”), VON, and Palliative Care. Also a special thank you to Tommy, Brenda, Jean and Melody. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A private funeral service will be held in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford, with Rev. Dorothy Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown. Donations in her memory may be made to the N.I.C.U. at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital or the Children’s Wish Foundation.
