Obituary of Derek William Somerton, Glace Bay

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Derek William Somerton, age 47 on Thursday, December 2nd, 2021 at the Glace Bay Hospital with his family by his side. Born in Glace Bay, Derek was survived by his father, Gerald and step mother Beverley, sons, Mark (Chelsea), Christopher (Chanel), Brett (Aliyah), granddaughters, Miah, Ella, grandson, Colton, brother, Terry (Shauna), sister, Kim (Carmen), sister in law, Grace, goddaughter and niece, Victoria, niece, Chelsea and nephews, Jeffery, Jeremy and Bradey as well as many great nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his mother, Joan (Rigby) Somerton, brother, Jerry, nephew, Mathew, grandparents, Harold and Olive Somerton and Grace and Billy Rigby as well as Bernard Cummings. Derek loved working alongside his father and brother at Gerald's Ultramar in Glace Bay as well as taking the occasional break to work in Alberta in the oil fields. Baseball and hockey were two of his favorite sports with Colorado Avalanche being his favorite team. Derek also loved a good game of darts with family and friends. He also would never miss the Beer Tent in Dominion during Seaside Days. A special thank you to the staff on 3 South at the Glace Bay Hospital and the ICU unit. The staff went above and beyond being so caring and compassionate. A special thank you to Derek's cousin, Wenda Timmons for all her support during this trying time. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 8th, 2021, from 12 pm until the time of the funeral service at 2 pm, all in VJ McGillivray Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 16 Reserve Street Glace Bay, NS. Fr. Dan Boudreau presiding. Burial to follow in Calvary Cemetery, Bridgeport. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in memory of Derek may be made to Palliative Care. Covid 19 restrictions will be proof of double vaccination and Id as well as a mask to be worn at all times while in the building.
