Obituary of Phyllis Marie McMullin, Gardiner Mines, WAKE CANCELLED

Phyllis Marie McMullin Gardiner Mines THE VISITATION IS CANCELLED DUE TO COVID, THE FUNERAL WILL STILL TAKE PLACE ON MONDAY AT 2 PM IN IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH. The world lost a beloved, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and sister, Phyllis Marie McMullin, age 87. It’s hard to put into words what “Ma” meant to our family. Phyllis was born in Glace Bay on December 28, 1933 and passed peacefully on December 15, 2021 at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital. Phyllis was the daughter of the late John Bennett and Sarah (Boutilier) Bennett. Phyllis raised her family in the house she grew up in. Their Gardiner Mines home was always filled with love, laughter, and baked goods (best cinnamon rolls we’ve ever had). If you drove past their home on any given day, you might think there was a celebration or party based on the cars in the driveway, but that was just some of the family stopping in for their regular “tea with ma”. The freezer was always filled with treats so there could be a feast if unexpected guests stopped in, a skill passed on to her children and grandchildren. Her door was always open to family, friends, and neighbours. Phyllis was a past member of St James Church, Gardiner Mines and a former member of the Altar Society. Ma worked at the Gardiner Center for many years, and later the Braemore Home. In her younger years, Ma was an avid gardener, she loved to skate, crochet and read. Phyllis loved good music and a good laugh. She liked to tour the island for a sunny drive. She and Jerry would often spend weekends in Cheticamp listening to fiddle tunes at the Doryman with her best friend and sister, Val. Phyllis will be terribly missed by her beloved sister, Valerie MacDonald. “Ma” is survived by her children, John B (Beverly), Florence, Anne (Timmy) Wilkinson, Lynn MacInnis, Wayne, Jennifer (Darren) Little, Carol (Mario) Colosimo, Margaret (John), and son in law, Frank MacMillan. Also survived by sisters-in-law, Judy McMullin, Gatha MacMullin, and Linda McMullin. Gramma loved and will be missed by her 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and all their families. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 41 years, Peter Gerard (Jerry), her eldest daughter, Phyllis Marie MacMillan, sisters, Jacqueline Mills (Clifford) and Margaret Strang (Lloyd), brother, Edward Bennett, brothers in law, Donald MacDonald, Angus, Daryl, Sandy McMullin and her sister in law, Anne Lelandais (Henry). So raise a glass (of rye or water, or a little of both) to Phyllis and all she meant to us. You are loved and will be missed so very much! We will think of you when we hear Ella sing Summertime or Dream a Little Dream. We will think of you with each tea biscuit we eat. We will think of you always with love and gratitude for the happy memories we hold on to so dearly. Visitation is CANCELLED DUE TO COVID. The funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday at 2 pm in Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport. Fr. Dan Boudreau officiating. Burial in St. James Cemetery, Gardiner Mines. Memorial donations in memory of Phyllis may be made to a charity of one's choice.
