Obituary of Olga Elizabeth Corbett, Dominion

It is with deep sadness that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Olga (Oppie) Elizabeth Corbett, age 89 at Waterford Heights in New Waterford Consolidated Hospital on January 6, 2022 surrounded by love and in the presence of her granddaughter, Kaitlyn. Born in Dominion, she was the daughter of Sarah “Sadie” (MacNeil) and Neil R. “Scottie” Campbell. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, former member of St. Eugene’s Parish and active in the St. Vincent De Paul Society for many years. Olga married Greg Corbett of Dominion in 1955. They moved to Boston in 1961, where they raised their family of 5 and lived for 18 years. She enjoyed bowling (her Canadian-American Club winning multiple championships), swimming and time spent with family and friends. Olga and Greg returned to Dominion where she worked at her brother John’s business, the Sandbar Lounge. From then on they were entrepreneurs of several different businesses in the town, and she put her all into every venture! She later became a Homemaker in Dominion where she enjoyed helping and providing companionship to seniors. Olga was a member of the Sandbar Women’s Dart League and the Shamrock Mixed Dart League. She and Alonzo enjoyed playing weekly cribbage games at the Hawks Club. She loved music and had her home as a place where friends and family could dance in the kitchen, which made her the happiest! She is survived by her sons Douglas (Debbie), Kevin (Angela), daughters Cathy and Cheryl (Scott), grandchildren, Deena, Keith, Kenny, Jessica, Meghan, Kaitlyn and Erin, and great grandchildren, Reece, Riley, Nathen and Brady. She will be missed by all, including her loving companion, best friend and dance partner who brought joy to her life and ours for 11 years, Mr. Alonzo Deveaux. The family would like to thank her loving niece Sandra Ellsworth for her tremendous support. We would also like to thank Laura Lee Gillis (Continuing Care Coordinator) for helping us keep our mom in her home for as long as we could. Special thanks to Fr. McGillivray for administering last rites. To the staff at Waterford Heights in New Waterford, we thank you for providing the absolute best care and keeping her smiling. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Greg, her son, Basil and grandson, Sheldon (in infancy), her brothers, John (Stella), Joseph “Dodo” (Irene), Frankie (Muriel), Peter, Fr. Basil, Neilie “Scottie”, Daniel (in infancy), sisters, Rhoda (Bob) Dugan, Theresa and Monica. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V. J. McGillivray Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass will take place at a later date with the time be announced. Donations may be made to Immaculate Conception Parish. Memories and condolences can be sent to the family by visiting www.vjmcgillivray.ca. Let’s raise our glasses to “Good health, long life, prosperity. To us!” Cheers Mom! We love you!
