Obituary of Gloria Lorraine Madden, New Waterford

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Gloria Madden, age 82, on January 22, 2022 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital with her family at her side. She was the daughter of the late John and Eliza (Barbour) Buffett of New Waterford. Gloria was a registered nurse and worked at the New Waterford Hospital and then with DEVCO for 22 years at Lingan, Phalen and the Coal Prep plant. She loved being a nurse; it really was a calling to her and remained so for her entire life. She also enjoyed having a good laugh and many times she would come home from work with a funny story to share. Even with working shift work throughout her career at DEVCO, she will always be remembered for putting the needs of her family first which she did countless times throughout her life. Gloria was a life-long dancer and kept her “dancing legs” going with her very special friend, Linda and the Gardiner Mines Stompers for over 30 years. She enjoyed travelling around to various local nursing homes as a volunteer to provide entertainment and was also active in many charitable fund raising events in CBRM. Gloria was a long-time member of Lingan Golf Club where she enjoyed playing in many tournaments and other events with her friends and husband over the years. She also enjoyed skating, playing cards and could occasionally be spotted at the casino. Gloria spent many winters in Florida with her husband and loved being outdoors, golfing, at the beach or just sitting on the patio listening to the birds. Mom was also a big movie fan and I have many memories of her and I watching movies at home or going to the show. Gloria is survived by her husband, Mike; daughter, Karen and many nieces and nephews. Gloria was pre -deceased by sisters, Lillian, Minnie, Issy and Mary; brothers, Max, Earl, Fred, Bill and Ben. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Cremation has taken place. Due to Covid-19 regulations, a private funeral service will be held in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, New Waterford, with Father Jim Oliver officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery, River Ryan, at a later date. Donations can be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital or the Nova Scotia SPCA, Cape Breton Shelter. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
