Obituary of Rachel Catherine (Lee) Shaw, Glace Bay

It is with great sadness we the family of Rachel Catherine (Lee) Shaw, age 90, announce her peaceful passing at home surrounded by her loving family on Monday, February 28th, 2022. Born in Glace Bay on October 3,1931, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Elizabeth (Lee) Shaw. Rachel stayed at home for many years caring for her 5 children. She was well known in Table Head for her delicious fudge. Rachel was very active in her community as a member of St. Leo's Parish Ladies Auxiliary, Friends of Seaview Manor and Reserve Pensioner's Club. Rachel was a lifelong supporter of her beloved NDP. She enjoyed a good game of 45s and bingo. Mother is survived by her 5 children, Nina (Kevin) Kirby, Kathy (Greg) Thiel, Rick (Kathy), Brian (Charlotte) and Nancy (Pat) Harroun. She was affectionately known as Gram to Rebekah (Billy) Dixon, Mackenzie (Amanda) Snow, Adam (Katie) Krewenki, Anita (Jeff) Keefe, Colin (Shauna) Shaw, Matthew (Bethany) Shaw, Kurt (Kathryn) & Lauren Simmons. Rachel was a proud great grandmother to Isla & Cooper Dixon, Grace, Sophia, & Tyler Keefe, and Lucas & Emery Shaw. Rachel was predeceased by her husband Richard "Apps". She was the last surviving member of her siblings; Murdeena, Margaret, Nora, Jim, Alex, Elizabeth, Emma, Edna, Charlene and Arthur. The family would like to extend a thank you to palliative care, VON, and the home care ladies including Mary Anita, her care coordinator, who provided guidance every step of the way. A special thank you to her private caregivers whom she loved and held in highest regard. Thank you to paramedics Pam and Mike for their professionalism and kindness. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. No visitation. The funeral mass will be held on Thursday, March 3rd, 2022 at 10 a.m. in St. Anne's Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Norman MacPhee presiding. Interment will be held in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney at a later date. Memorial donations in memory of Rachel may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation.
