Obituary of Coreen Marguerite (McKinnon) Stoliar, Glace Bay

Coreen Stoliar, age 81 of Glace Bay, passed away suddenly on Thursday, May 12th, 2022 in the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Halifax. Born in Glace Bay, NS, Coreen was the daughter of the late Jack & Mary Marguerite (Merlin) McKinnon. She was survived by her son, Andrew (Judy) and much loved granddaughter, Isabella as well as her sisters, Valerie and Sharman. Coreen will be missed by many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved husband, George (2011), to whom she was married to for over 40 years. She was also predeceased by her brother Leroy and sister Colette. Coreen entered the convent, but eventually left to become a teacher. Coreen was blessed with a teaching gift and many students were fortunate to have her at Coxheath Elementary school where she taught for years. She was an avid golfer and a member at Lingan Golf Club. Coreen won various golf tournaments including the Atlantic Super Seniors in 2015 and for the second time in 2018 at the young age of 78! Coreen and George loved to travel, especially to Myrtle Beach in the winters to golf. Andrew, Judy and Isabella often joined them in Myrtle Beach for golfing and family time. Summers were spent in Round Island and Coreen would always be up for a game of ladder ball or bocce if she wasn’t practising her chipping. Even at the age of 81, she would beat everyone at ladder ball. Coreen found time to volunteer at the Glace Bay Hospital. She enjoyed her time playing cards and socializing with friends. Friends will remember her for her quick wit and the great stories she could tell. She had a zest for life and will be sorely missed by her family and many friends. Friends and family will be received at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay on Wednesday, May 18, 2022 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. The funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, May 19th at 11 am in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Reserve Mines, followed by burial at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Fr. Dan Boudreau presiding. Memorial donations in memory of Coreen may be made to a charity of one’s choice. On line condolences to the family can be expressed at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca
