Ethel Shirley Fogarty, Dominion

Obituary of Ethel Shirley Fogarty, Dominion

It is with heavy hearts we, the family, announce the passing of our loving wife, mother and grandmother. Ethel Shirley (Crosby) Fogarty, 77, passed away peacefully, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney with her family at her side after a brief illness.

Born in Glace Bay, NS, she was the daughter of the late Graham and Peg (Stephenson) Crosby.

Shirley was a member of the Immaculate Conception Parish, St. Vincent de Paul Society, and CWL, Bridgeport.

Mom was a person of courage, strength, and faith who cared for others but especially her family. Mom loved having family stay at the house and always made a feast of spaghetti and meatballs or a turkey dinner with a blueberry pie on the side. There was always a card game that followed. She loved her “Shirley Thursdays” with Aunt Marguerite and the girls. Mom enjoyed her nightly cribbage games after supper with dad and even let him win on occasion!

Shirley is survived by her beloved husband of 56 years, Jim, daughters, Annette (Glen) Olsvik, Halifax and Kelly (Stephen) Bray, Halifax and son, Pat (Cheryl) Edson, Alberta. Loving grandmother to Sydney, Sean and Keiran. Sister to Andrew (Mel), Adam (Theresa), Raymond (Gary) and Paul (Carole) and sister-in-law to Agnes Pearce and Kaye Dunn, Lloyd (Roberta) Edmond, nieces, nephews, dear friends, and neighbors.

Besides her parents Shirley was predeceased by her sisters Peggy and Bridget and brother-in-law, Tim.

Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay where visitation will be held on Thursday from 3:00 until 7:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will take place at 11:00 am on Friday at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Bridgeport. Burial to follow in Calvary Cemetery.

The family would like to thank the Homecare staff, who assisted mom the last few years, as well as the staff of the Regional Hospital for their care and compassion.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, Parkinson Canada or charity of your choice.
