Obituary of Gerald "Dugan" MacKinnon, Donkin
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gerald “Dugan” MacKinnon on Sunday, July 24th, 2022 at Seaview Manor at the age of 90 years. Dugan was born in Glace Bay in 1931.
Dugan worked for Devco as a coal miner for thirty-three years and fished with commercial fishermen. He loved darts, walks with his dog, cuddling with his cats, hunting and fishing with his friends and dances at the Legion with his Anna. He was a member of the RCL/ Branch 5 Mixed Dart League and the Army and Navy Unit 246 in Glace Bay. Dugan was a great dart player and traveled to many tournaments representing Donkin and Nova Scotia. He had the best sense of humour and that smile and sparkle in his eye lit up a room.
Dugan was predeceased by his loving wife, Anna Christina (MacNabb) MacKinnon of 61 years, an infant daughter at birth and his parents, John Donald and Veronica (Ryan) MacKinnon.
Dugan is survived by his daughter, Carla Penson (John), son, Allan (Dawn), sister, Louise MacKinnon and sister-in-law, Theresa McIsaac. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Brendan (Ainslie), Breanna (James), Madison and Mitchell, by four great-grandchildren, Harper Kay, Maisie, Ann-Marie and Arielle and by many nieces and nephews.
Dugan had a wide circle of friends. The family would like to send special thanks to Gord Donaldson, Chris Spencer, Al Spinney and Frema and Lloyd Graham…who in recent years provided so much support, kindness and joy to Dugan.
The family would like to thank the staff at Seaview Manor for the care provided to Dugan in the last year. Special heartfelt thanks to Dugan’s nieces Chantel and Nicole who work at the Manor. Dugan loved and cherished the time you spent with him. The family is comforted in knowing you were there for him. We also thank you for the ongoing video visits with Dugan…at a time when we were unable to be with him in person, the video chats allowed us to visit, laugh and cry together.
Cremation will take place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, Glace Bay.
As per Dugan’s wishes, a Celebration of Life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 5, 11 Second St, Donkin, NS B1A 6S5 on Saturday, August 06th at 2:00 P.M.
Dugan absolutely loved his pets. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to Elderdog Canada – Cape Breton Municipality. Donations may be made online at https://elderdog.ca/donate/
