Obituary of Janet "Jenny" Hickey, R.N., Dominion

It is with the deepest sadness that we announce the passing of our mom, nanny, and friend on Sunday, August 28, 2022 in Parkstone Enhanced Care, Halifax.

Born on September 13, 1935, in the Town of New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Neil R. MacDonald and Mary MacDonald (MacPhee). 

Jenny graduated at New Waterford General School of Nursing and went on to get a post-graduate course from St. Michaels Hospital in Toronto.  She had an exceptional career as an operating room nurse and supervisor, Jenny always spoke positively about her 40 year career finishing at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Glace Bay.

She was a member of St. Eugene’s Parish and a long-term resident of Dominion which she fondly referred to as home.

Besides her parents she was predeceased by the love of her life Frank Gilbert Hickey, an infant son Francis Gilbert Hickey as well as siblings, Ranny MacDonald, Anna MacDonald, Chris Petrie, Malcom MacDonald and Evelyn MacEachern.

After the passing of Frank, Jenny spent a lot of time travelling to enjoy her family both at home and away.  She was affectionately called “Nanny” by her family and will be missed deeply by her kids, Ramona Marie Berg (Brad), Charmaine Presunka (Paul),  Brad Hickey (Loriann) and Gary Hickey (Rochelle) as well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 1^st, 2022 from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay.

The funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, September 2^nd at 11 am in Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport followed by interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Fr. Dan Boudreau officiating.
