Obituary of Mary Agnes Walker

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Mary Agnes Walker on Monday, November 28, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, An Cala Palliative Care Unit, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Inverness on August 6, 1935, she was the daughter of the late John Joe and Elyse (Larade) Odo. In her younger years, mom worked as a waitress at Harry Yips Restaurant before beginning her journey as an incredible mother. Nothing was more important to mom than raising her eight children. Widowed at a young age of 34, she was left to raise her children on her own, doing an amazing job regardless of the hardships she faced. Mom always had a passion for travel and with her second love of her life, Jackie, would embark every summer for a month of travel throughout the U.S. and Canada. Although stricken by a stroke nearly 20 years ago, it never held her back from doing what she loved best; going to church, trips to the Casino or just a drive with one of her children. Mom is survived by her eight children, John Joe (Gina), B.C., Sheila (Paul), Ont., Bernie (Lynn), New Waterford, Debbie, Alberta, Sandra, Sydney, Malcolm, New Waterford, Mary (Vince), New Waterford and Gail (Dave), New Waterford. Mom is also survived by grandchildren David, Jennifer, Melissa, Chris, Lisa and Nicole, Jacklyn and Bradley, Malcolm Jr. and Charles, Tracy Lynn and Joshua, Ashley and Chad, and her 13 great-grandchildren. Besides her parents, mom was predeceased by her husband, Malcolm, in 1969, brother, Francis, her companion, Jackie, and her grandson, David. Visitation will be held Thursday, Dec. 1, 2016 from 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will take place Friday, December 2, at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Father Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery, River Ryan, with a luncheon to follow at the Knights of Columbus Hall, King Street, New Waterford. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the An Cala Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
