Obituary of Reginald "Reg" Currie, Glace Bay

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father Reginald “Reg” Currie at the Hospice Building in Sydney on Thursday, November 3rd, 2022 after a long battle with cancer. Born in Glace Bay on September 9th, 1940 to the late Bertie “MacIntosh” and Jerome Currie.

Da “Bop” the nickname given to him by his grandkids was an avid singer, guitar player and great story teller. He spent many nights playing tarabish and doing scratchies with his best friend and companion Esther Bobbett.

In his younger years he lived and worked in Ontario for the Ford Plant and started his family with our mom, “Anna” by his side. They returned to Cape Breton in the late 1960’s where he started his lifelong career as a welder with Devco.

Surviving are his children, Francine “John” McIntyre, Joey “Janet”, Michael “Sherette” and Debbie “George Vater”, with whom he resided for his last months. He had 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Reg is also survived by his best friend, Esther Bobbett and her family whom he adored, sisters, Minette “Tom” Murphy and Noreen “Bob” MacNeill.

Da was predeceased by Anna his wife of 48 years and siblings Monica, Adie and Anita.

We would like to give special thanks to Dr. David Ley and staff, VON, palliative care nurses and doctors, to the Hospice where he spent his final days and Vivian McInnis for all of their exceptional care.

In keeping with his wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral mass. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, Glace Bay.

Graveside prayers will be held on Tuesday, November 8th, 2022 at 11 a.m. in St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Glace Bay with Fr. Norman MacPhee presiding. Family and friends are invited.
