Muriel Constance McDonald, R.N.

Glace Bay

Muriel Constance McDonald, R.N., age 85, passed away November 3rd, 2022 at the Cove Guest Home, Sydney.

Muriel was born in Glace Bay the daughter of Cornelius (Corn) Gillis and Rita Gillis (MacDonald).

She graduated from Morrison High School and then went on to earn her Registered Nurse qualification at St. Joseph School of Nursing in Glace Bay. Muriel loved her time nursing, especially when dealing with seniors, but left after 10 years to raise her children.

Mom made sure to stay active and walked everyday until her late seventies. She was often accompanied by her niece, and good friend, Diane Mercer. Muriel enjoyed skating, baseball and any type of physical activity, however her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially in Mira. Everyone who knew Muriel loved her.

Surviving are her sons, Howard (Gayle) and James (Collette) and her grandchildren, Sarah, Connor, Cameron and Collin, as well as her sisters, Rita Campbell, Corinne (John) Lipton, Donna (Brad) Arsenault, and brother Sheldon (Linda) Gillis. She is also survived by her numerous nieces and nephews whom she truly adored.

Mom was predeceased by her parents, Corn and Rita as well as her brother Fred. She raised her children on her own after her husband, Ronald McDonald, was killed in a mine explosion in 1984. Muriel was the absolute best mother a son could wish for.

Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A very special thank you to the Cove Guest Home for their care and compassion shown to our mother.

The funeral service is Thursday, November 10th, 2022 at 11 a.m. followed by a reception, all in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay.Fr. Duaine Devereaux presiding.

As per her wishes Muriel will be buried with her mother, father and brother in St. Anne’s Cemetery, as her husband Ron's remains were never recovered from the coal mine.
