Obituary of Albert MacDonald 'Doinks'

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Albert MacDonald, 73, of New Waterford on Friday, December 9, 2016 at the New Waterford Hospital surrounded by his family and exceptional nursing staff. Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late Angus and Mary (MacDonald) MacDonald. Albert leaves behind a special legacy through his touching lyrics to the well known and cherished song, which he wrote, called the 'Causeway Crossing'. It was recorded in 1981 on the Rise and Follies first album. The song has a powerful meaning that has touched the hearts of many Cape Bretoners having to leave the Island for work. Albert wrote several other songs and also enjoyed wood working. Surviving are his sisters, Hazel (Louis) Syms, Harriet MacDonald, both of New Waterford, Agnes MacDonald (Tim Boudreau), Petit de Grat. Besides his parents, Albert was predeceased by sisters, Sandra, Anne Margaret and Catherine; brothers, Archie, Jackie and John Louis. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 13, at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Father Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at St. Leonard's Parish Hall, Convent Street, New Waterford. Donations in his memory may be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, New Waterford. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca. A special thank you to all the staff on the 2nd floor of New Waterford Hospital and to Dr. Peter Littlejohn, who is not only Albert's doctor but a special friend. Your care and compassion will never be forgotten.
