Obituary of Anne Marie Gillis
Age 96, formerly of Glace Bay, passed away peacefully at Northwood Care Centre, Halifax on December 9th, 2016. Born in Glace Bay, she was the only child of the late Charles and Cassie (Steele) MacLellan. She was a MacLellan descendant of the Mabou pioneers. Until her move to Halifax in 2007 she had been a lifelong resident of Glace Bay, growing up on Union St. and later residing on Hickman St.
She was a member of St. Anne's Roman Catholic Parish and a graduate of St. Anne's High School where she excelled at Latin. For many years she was co-proprietor of MacLellan Dairy on Union Street. Annie was a devoted wife, mother, grand-mother and great-grandmother. Her love for and commitment to her family was the major focus of her life. She was an avid reader, music lover, and an enthusiastic piano player. Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by her husband Basil with whom she shared 53 years of marriage.
She is survived by children: The Rev. Canon Rod Gillis (Wendy), Halifax; Mary Catherine MacNeil (Conrad), Dartmouth; Floyd C. Gillis (Boneta MacLennan) , Halifax; Rosanne Gillis Bernard (Tim), Fall River: grandchildren, Lynore Crispe (Brian), Eastern Passage; Ian Gillis (Marie Lavallée), Chester Basin; Genevieve MacNeil (Jon Nolet), Dartmouth; The Rev. Anna Gillis Hoeg (Walter), Chester Basin; Conrad MacNeil, Dartmouth; Neil Gillis, Halifax; Peter Gillis (Kristin Tanswell), Fredericton, NB: Great grandchildren, Lydon, Callum, Gavin, Shelley, Ruah, Avery, Elliot. She is also survived by several cousins MacLellan.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 14 at St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. A reception will follow in the church foyer. Interment will be in St. Anne’s Cemetery. "Aeternam habeas requiem".
