Obituary of Mary Genevieve 'Jean' Chesal, Scotchtown

With deepest regrets, the Chesal family announce the death of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Mary Genevieve 'Jean' Chesal on March 5, 2023.

Born January 23, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Jim and Annie (Gallant) Nearing. 

Ma was fiercely protective of her family. She enjoyed gardening, picking berries (especially blueberries), and she loved cats.

She and her late husband spent many enjoyable evenings dancing to the music of the Starlight Nighters at the Polish Village in Whitney Pier.

Besides her parents, Ma was predeceased by her husband, Sonny Chesal; her in-laws, John and Ina Chesal; daughter, Mary, in infancy; sons, Richard and Gregory; brothers, Myles, Henry, Charles, Jimmie and Raymond; sisters, Utah and Violet; son-in-law, Billy MacMullin.

She is survived by her sisters, Caroline and Anna; sons, John (Shirley), Westmount, Jimmie (Mary Lois), New Waterford, and daughter, Barbara MacMullin, Scotchtown; grandchildren, John Chesal Jr., Edwardsville, Sarah Hill (Jamie) , Grand Prairie, Alberta, Stephen MacMullin (Pascale), Ottawa, Barbara Jean Kennedy (Michael Eldridge), New Waterford, Kevin MacMullin (Suzanne), Calgary, Laurie Magliaro (Kyle), New Waterford and Karla Chesal (Jess), Scotchtown; great-grandchildren, William Kennedy, Hunter and Ethan Eldridge, Luke MacMullin, Isaac MacMullin, Rikki MacMullin, Ella MacMullin, Brody Chesal, Haley and Gunnar Hill, and James Magliaro.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 8 from noon until 1 :45 p.m. with a service to follow at 2 p.m. all in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Burial will be in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown with a reception to follow in the funeral home.
