Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Angus (Gus) MacPherson on March 11, 2023 at the age of 87 years. He passed peacefully being surrounded by his loving family. He was baptized and a practicing Roman Catholic, receiving the last rites of the Church prior to his passing.

Gus was born in Port Hood, Cape Breton on April 18, 1935. The family later moved to New Waterford where he lived within a happy, humble and memorable family environment with his 12 siblings. He was the eldest son of Thomas MacPherson and Mary Jessie (Cameron).

Gus was married for 65 years to his loving wife, Elizabeth MacPherson (O’Quinn). They raised their children in Pasadena and Corona Del Mar, California. Never losing their roots to Cape Breton, they started their first company in 1966 called Cape Construction (Concrete Contractor). Later they founded Breton Construction Inc (General Contractor) in 1975. Breton Construction became the 10th largest private company in Orange County in 1986 and was in the top 400 for general contractors in the United States. Gus was best known for his generosity and being the hardest worker on site. He was always up for a game of cards and a glass of whiskey!

Gus is preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth, parents Thomas and Jessie MacPherson, and four siblings Florence (James), Jean, Donald (Della), and Lawrence (Donna). Gus is survived by eight siblings, Hughie (Evelyn), Anselm (Brenda), Fr. Albert (Augustinian Priest), Alexander (Colena), Fr. Damian (Franciscan Priest), Gregory (Donna), Leonard, and Joan (Frank).  He is also survived by his four children Dave (Linda), Donna (Buddie), Daryl (Michele), and Dale (Yvonne) along with 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass of resurrection will be celebrated at the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, on Tuesday, July 18th at 10 a.m. A reception will follow at the Army, Navy, Airforce, Unit 217, New Waterford. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
