Obituary of John "Ricky" Ratchford MacInnis, Glace Bay

John “Ricky” Ratchford MacInnis

Glace Bay

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John “RIcky” Ratchford MacInnis, age 75 on Friday April 14th, 2023 in the Glace Bay Hospital.

Born in Inverness, he was the youngest son of the late Alexander and Mary (McLeod) MacInnis.  John grew up in Glace Bay from a young age, living with his uncle and aunt Angus and Martha (Mannon) MacInnis, after his father was quarantined with Tuberculosis and his mother passed.

John will be sadly missed by his son, Scott (Kelly), his grandchildren, Angus and Graceland, his brother, Alex MacInnis (Patricia), his sisters-in-law, Gail Murphy and Pam Skippens (Jim), his daughter-in-law, Thess MacInnis, and many other friends and extended family.

John was predeceased by his parents, his wife, Sharon (Cox) MacInnis, his son, Shane, his brothers, Carter, Jack, and Daniel, and his uncle and aunt Angus and Martha MacInnis.

John was a veteran, spending his military career in electronics, repairing aircraft and radar equipment, a career he continued as a civilian with multiple organizations. John was a handy person to have around if you had an electrical problem with anything.

John grew up in a different era.  He was powered by coffee and cigarettes. He was an avid reader, consuming novels at a sprinter’s pace. He had a fondness for westerns and was a fan of Louis L’Amour having read all his works.

John loved solving puzzles and looked forward to what new challenge Santa would bring him every year.  No puzzle remained unsolved by New Year’s. John loved his family and adored his grandchildren, who he spoiled regularly.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Glace Bay. A private service will be arranged at a later date.

Memorial donations in memory of John may be made to the IWK Foundation. On line condolences to the family can be expressed at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca
