Obituary of Margaret Ann 'Mockey' MacIntyre, New Waterford

The family regrets to announce the death of Mockey MacIntyre. Mockey died at Waterford Heights with family present on July 27, 2023 after a brief illness. She was born in Inverness, NS on February 23, 1932, the daughter of the late Hughie Malcolm and Tena (MacIntyre) MacIntyre. She moved to New Waterford with her family in 1935, where she lived the rest of her life. She was a lifelong member of St. Agnes Parish and more recently the Parish of St. Leonard.

She is survived by her sister, Flora (the late Gerard) Beaton and her sister-in-law, Tuddy MacIntyre, both of New Waterford. Also mourning her loss are many nephews and nieces from the Beaton, Desveaux, MacIntyre and MacLellan families as well as numerous grand nephews and nieces and great-grand nephews and nieces.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Mary (Joe) MacLellan, and Helen (Simon) Desveaux, and brothers, Duncan (Spickie), John (Peggy), Ronald (Anne), Billy (Alma) and Boyd, and several nieces and nephews.

Mockey attended St. Agnes School and was a member of the 1948 Provincial Champion St. Agnes Girls Basketball team. After finishing school, she worked at U-Get-More, John Hinchey’s and the Waterford Supermarket and was caregiver for her mother until she died in 1979. She lived in the family home, which remains the focal point of many family gatherings and celebrations.

Mockey had a wonderful, feisty personality that endeared her to all. She enjoyed her weekly shopping trips with her sisters in the 50’s and 60’s, the family outings to Sangaree every Sunday in the summer, the women’s trips with her sisters to Margaree and later with her nieces and friends around Cape Breton, Halloween with fireworks and fourag, and poker games with the girls. She was one-of-a-kind and will be lovingly remembered for many years to come.

The family would like to thank the girls from New Waterford Homecare. She enjoyed your visits so much. An extra special thank you goes to all the staff of Waterford Heights, who took such loving care of Mockey during her stay there. And finally, thanks to the many family members who were so kind to Mockey over the years.

Visitation will be held on Monday, July 31 from 6-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. A Funeral Mass of celebration will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 1 at 11 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Father Godwin Obike officiating.
