Obituary of Frederick Arthur 'Freddy' Sponagle, New Victoria
It is with great sadness that we, the family announce the peaceful passing of Fredrick Arthur ‘Freddy’ Sponagle on August 16, 2023, at the An Cala Palliative Care Unit, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, after a brief illness.
Born in Issac’s Harbour, Guysborough County, NS, on April 13, 1947, Freddy was the son of the late Harold and Helen Sponagle and was raised by the late Viola (Spanks) Baker.
Freddy loved being outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He loved to cook, especially his cabbage rolls and lemon meringue pie and wanted to feed everyone, people and animals included! You could always find him with an open door and a smile on his face and after every visit you were sure to leave with a full-belly and something for the road. Freddy worked as a Foreman Roofer for 43 years at various companies across Cape Breton, including Tasco, Wadco and Brimac Roofers until his retirement in 2001.
Freddy is survived by his loving wife Doreen (MacMillan) Sponagle, daughter Corinne Sponagle (Blair MacKinnon) and his grandson Robert Fredrick Durando, who was like a son to him. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Bart (Tillie), Walter (Mary Alice) and Greg (Mary Jane) MacMillan along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Freddy was predeceased by his son, Freddie Sponagle; brothers, Kevin and Jimmy Sponagle; sister-in-law Mary MacMillan and brother-in-law Frankie MacMillan.
Our family would like to thank the staff at the CBRH Emergency Room for their quick care and the An Cala Palliative Care Unit and Dr. John Ritter for your care and compassion. We’d also like to thank our neighbors, David, Angela, Timmy and of course Blair for always being there when we needed you.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford, where visitation will take place on Wednesday, from 10:00 am until service time at 11:00. Rev. Duncan Roach will be officiating. A reception will follow in the funeral home. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery.
Donations can be made to Hospice Cape Breton or the charity of one’s choice.
