Obituary of Veronica Irene Fortune, Dominion
It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Veronica Irene Fortune of Dominion on Thursday, September 7, 2023 at the Glace Bay Hospital at the age of 76.
Born in Glace Bay she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Hannah (Forbes) Fortune.
She is predeceased by her sons Mark Anthony Fortune and Patrick Blair Fortune, brothers Patrick (Patty) and Myles Fortune.
She is survived by her daughter Hannah (Brad) Grant, her grandchildren Abigail and Leighton Grant of Athabasca, Alberta; Jorja Martin of Dominion, Myles and Hannah Lilly Martin of Sydney; brothers George (Lydia) Fortune of Dominion, Norman (Susan) Fortune of Oxford; Bobby Boutilier of Glace Bay, sisters Annabelle (Henry) Skinner of Sydney and Eileen White of Dominion. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews who loved her very much.
In her younger years she was a member of Air Cadets and loved to dance. She volunteered for many organizations such as Meals on Wheels, she was a porter at the Glace Bay Hospital, coached girls’ baseball in Dominion, taught religion classes and was a Eucharistic minister at St. Eugene’s Church, taught at Bridgeport-Dominion Nursery School, canvasser for the Diabetic Association and the Canadian Cancer Society. She was a member of the singing group “Shenanigans” entertaining many local seniors and long-term care patients. She was very proud to volunteer for the NDP.
Veronica served terms as president of Branch 78 Royal Canadian Legion, Dominion; St. Vincent De Paul Society- St. Eugene’s Church, St. Eugene’s and Immaculate Conception Catholic Women’s League; and was a board member of the CIEP Program.
A special shout out to the nurses of 3 East of Glace Bay Hospital for their constant care and compassion during her hospital stay and to her dear friend Karen MacDonald for all she did.
We thank everyone for their kind words and support during this difficult time.
Visitation will be held Monday, September 11, 2023 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay.
Funeral mass is on Tuesday, September 12, 2023 at 11 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport with Fr. Dan Boudreau presiding and Fr. Jim Oliver concelebrating.
Interment immediately to follow at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Everyone is welcome to join us at Branch 78 Legion, Neville Street, Dominion for a luncheon at 2 p.m.
