Obituary of Francis "Frank" Baptist Almon, Reserve Mines

The family of Francis (Frank) Baptiste Almon, age 72 of Reserve Mines regret to announce his passing on Monday, September 11th, 2023 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Glace Bay, Frank was the son of the late Murdoch and Laura (Finnell) Almon.

Frank is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Donna (Poirier). Together for 52 years they built a beautiful family that feels devastated by his loss. He is survived by his daughter, Lorelle, Reserve Mines, sons, Scott (Amber), Edmonton and Darren (Charlene), Sydney, his grandchildren, Layla, Emily, Carys, Parker, Max, Kristian, Ellisa, Danielle, Dylan and Breton.

He is also survived by his sister Lois (Eddie) Livingston, brothers Mick and Joe (Belinda) and sister in law, Glenda Poirier, all of Reserve Mines.

Frank was predeceased by in-laws Harry (Bozo) and Annie Mae Poirier.

Frank worked as a coal miner for 24 years with Devco.  Following the closing of the mines until his retirement, he was a proud member of Union Local 92 where he worked throughout Alberta.  In his younger years he devoted his free time to being an executive member and 8-year president of the former St. Joseph’s Men’s Club in Reserve Mines.  Retirement suited Frank well and golf season was his favourite time of year.  As a longtime member of Lingan Golf Club, Frank was seen enjoying his early morning games with his close friends.

Frank took pride in everything he did and everything he did was done with a smile, a laugh and of course a quick joke.  Whether you grew up or worked with him, played any type of sport with him… baseball, hockey, bowling, pool, cards, golf (the list goes on and on) was served a beer or bought a bingo card from him, you walked away smiling.  Frank’s kindness, sense of humor, vast knowledge and ability to tell a riveting story will be a great loss to his family, friends and all who knew him.

The family will be forever grateful to the staff of the ICU at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, especially thankful to Candace Morrison RN for her exceptionally kind care to Frank and his family. Special thanks to 3 East at Glace Bay General Hospital and to Doctors Hebb, Kagedan, and Khodadad for their attentive care.

In lieu of flowers the family ask for donations to be made to Cape Breton Hospice.

Cremation has taken place.  Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 19th from 12 noon until 2:45 pm followed by a service at 3 pm then a reception, all in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. Chaplain Lilly MacDonald presiding.
