Deeply saddened! My sincere condolences to the family!
To keep a long story short.
My mother's maiden name was Katsafanas. She arrived in Halifax 1956 and my understanding is that she stayed with James Kachafanas who as I understand was Vince's father.
She stayed with them for 6 months before she moved on to Montreal.
She always fondly remembered Glace Bay (and Sydney).
Furthermore, Vince was the best man at my parents wedding (1959) and one of the witnesses was James Kachafanas. The names appear on the Marriage Certificate.
My condolences

I was very sad to read about our friend, Vince's passing. When I was raising my teacher's license in the early 90s, Vince was one of my professors. We all loved Vince. He was very kind, smart & very professional. Over the last few years, my husband & I would meet Vince & Lorna at the culinary on Thursdays for lunch. We always enjoyed talking to them - in fact, Vince gave my husband, John, a nickname. Vince called John "Lucky" - because he has me! Wasn't that nice! We always had a laugh & Vince loved to hear a nice story or joke & have a laugh. Vince always saw the good in people. He was a truly lovely man. We are very sorry for your loss of this dear man.

To Vince’s family, I was saddened to read that Vince has passed. I worked at Central Office in the 80’s and early 90’s and I knew Vince from there. He was just the kindest gentleman and was liked by everyone. He always had a story to share which would often end with laughter. He was so proud of his family and spoke highly of them. I know he liked photography. In fact I have a print of one of his photos that was taken in Louisbourg a long time ago. I often think of Vince and would always wonder how he was doing. Reading his obituary tells me he was doing pretty good and spending time with his loved ones. May God give you strength at this difficult time and may he Rest In Peace.

Ron & I, Maria & Vicken are so sorry. I can imagine it has been a rough couple of months for you. We loved your dad as he felt like the closest thing to Mom and always felt like the most family to us. He was a character and I loved it. I can just imagine the "bouzouki-esque" type of reunion they all are having. I know he drove you crazy at times but the love and adoration was big on both sides. I love you, I am thinking about you. My deepest condolences to the family of Vince. You and the community have lost a one and only. Vince was my first “boss” when I first joined the School Board Admin Office staff in 1987. The accolades already written on his behalf defined him so accurately and showed how much he was respected and loved. As his secretary, I was always impressed by his care and genuine concern for students with special needs, whether it was about inclusion or day-to-day problems…he had their backs always! On a lighter note, his stories, poems, etc. at our summer and Xmas staff parties always left us with sore cheeks and bellies from laughing so hard. God Bless all who loved him. He will be missed!

Hello,
I was a student in Vince's first year teaching us grade 7 math at Brookside School in Glace Bay somewhere around 1957-58. Everyone had great fun! I remember an in-class talent show where I and Wayne Becker sand Loollypop - a hit at that time. I didn't learn much math but the class was great. Later, at Morrison GB High, he and Norm Carmichael were guidance advisors.

Thinking of you all at this sad time. Vince was a wonderful man and the best teacher. He made learning easy with his wit and funny additions to Shakespeare. His advice to his classroom students, when filling out our individual information paper on the first day of school was, in the sex box it's male or female, not yes or no. That was the ice breaker for the first day of school. He was dear friends with my Mom and Dad. I also considered him a friend as did, I am sure all his students. He was more than a teacher. Someone you just loved. Sending prayers for God's comfort and His presence around you all and also hugs and thanking you for sharing him with us. Judy Tomada MacPhee

Dear Lorna and Vince's family - How do you even begin to describe the impact of the 'larger than life' presence of someone like Vince? He was funny, generous and kind, and he always kept you thinking and moving forward as a student. It was easy to learn from him - he made it fun. One favourite memory I have of him is the time my mother, Florence, arranged to have nearly 300 students from Glace Bay schools visit EXPO 67 along with her Teenaires. (Kiki - I think you were there.). There had to be one chaperone with every 10 students, and Vince agreed to go as a chaperone. I vividly remember being on the EXPO grounds (with our group of ten), and Vince came flying by being driven in a tourist buggy declaiming like a Roman Senator: "I have lost my troops!' Wherever they got to, or how they all found each other again, they all made it home safely, but it is a scene I will never forget - Vince flying out of this huge crowd on the hunt for his 'troops' - and making it all fun. He will always be dearly remembered, as you can tell from the fond and loving remembrances on this page. He made an impact on us all and gave us so many great gifts for handling life. Rest in peace, Vince - and may flights of angels guide you to your rest.

My memory of Vince
A hot summer night on the Island of Milos Greece we were waiting for Vince and Kay to arrive from Canada. Around 10:30 pm after having a few drinks of Ouzo, a man comes up and says in Greek ( Ξέρει κανεvας από 2 ξένους από την αμερικανική που μόλις έφτασαν ) Does anyone know of 2 foreigners from American who just arrived .Milos was different back then everyone knew who was on the islands who you were and where you were from. Went down to the platia , where Vince and his wife Kay were being let out of the taxi. They each had 1 bag , a knapsack .I said you guys pack light as they were traveling around the Greek isles and making a stop in Milos to visit friends and family. Then the trunk of the taxi opened and there was a third bag, Vince says in greek Ο Γιάννης πάρε τη βαλίτσα (John get the suitcase).I Grabbed the suitcase from the trunk, Vince says be careful with that one it has my camera equipment in it .When Vince and Kay went out around the island of Milos with their enormous camera bag and tripod, the locals mistook them for a documentary film crew scouting locations for the next big Hollywood blockbuster. The islanders couldn't help but wonder if they were filming a sequel to Zorba The Greek or Mamma Mia, or perhaps attempting to capture the elusive Venus De Milos arms .The tripod was so big it could be used as a cell tower.
Vince will be watching over you all through that lens

How best to describe Vince?! ... Fun, Fair, inspirational, entertaining. I first encountered him in 7th grade at Brookside school as a 12 year old. He made every day fun and treated us all to the joy of learning. His stories (to a 12 year old) were somewhat outrageous. It was his second year teaching after graduating from Mt A and he loved to tell us about his participation in pranks on campus. As unbelievable as some of them were I believed every word. There were times when I think the laughter from our classroom must have been heard throughout the building. In the midst of it all he achieved academic focus and we absorbed the lessons in the midst of amazing fun. One indelible memory ... Friday after lunch he set up a record player and played his latest favorite record ... Johnny Horton's "Battle of New Orleans" and the whole class had it memorized before we left for the week end. What a history lesson! I think when it came to choosing an undergrad his Mt A stories helped my decision and provided some of the best years of my life so far. I understand that family and friends will grieve at a time like this; but so many memories will provide smiles to all. RIP DR. K.

To The Kachafanas Family
I want to send you warm greetings today as a source of spiritual support to all of you at this time. Though we know that Vince’s memory will last forever in our hearts, something very real has occurred. You have all lost a loved one, someone close and dear to you. This calls for a slow and gradual awakening of a love that is for the moment lost, a life that is now no more, a relationship that in the physical sense has ceased. Nonetheless, his spirit lives on and his memory will never be forgotten.
Have you ever looked over the asphalt of an abandoned air field and notice how a blade of grass can penetrate through that concrete and come back to life. In a similar sense, Vince’s life will never be silenced. It is said that death is not “after life” but more appropriately “beyond life”. It is timeless and space less. He is in the life of God, and finally at peace with Kay, “the love of his life”. Vince loved him family, especially him grandchildren. He loved them with a deep sense of admiration and appreciation for the gift they were to him and the gift he was to them. Happiness is not what made Vince grateful. It was gratefulness that made him happy. He generously gave back to others in a spirit of peace and love. He had that ability to listen to other people and to identify with them. He lived doing God’s will. for indeed, their pain was his pain.
Vince has now found his solace with God as well as with Kay. And we too have to find our solace and peace wherever God calls us to be there for other people just as Vince so richly did in his life time. We have to continue doing the good things that Vince did. Vince reached out to others, sought love and compassion, and offered a friendly smile and a sense of reassurance on his way. Today, we must imitate him and his good deeds in our own lives. In this way his spirit will not be forgotten and his memory will live on in our hearts. A few years ago, I had the good fortune to journey with a lady from New Waterford, where I was asked to sing and play at her funeral. The niece asked if I would sing something uplifting rather than sad and pensive.
Praise and Bless the Lord
Take off your robe of sorrow, your garb of pain and woe. Put on for now the beauty of the glory of the Lord. Every mountain will be lowered, every valley filled with joy. The wooded glen and fragrant tree, a shade at God’s command. R.
Refrain The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy. Praise the Lord, oh bless God’s name,
praise the Lord today. Praise the Lord, oh bless God’s name, praise the Lord today.
God’s life is food like water in the desert of our souls. There is no need for weeping when at last God calls us home. Our lives are filled with fortune, our tongue with shouts of joy. God calling us at heaven’s gate a blessed dream come true. R.
Let’s pray for all our sisters, our brothers and our friends who have gone on before us to the land of peace and bliss. Through Mary’s intercession, through the saints who hear our pray’r, for God to guide us safely where there’s neither tear nor pain.
Now Vince can truly rejoice in God’s invitation: “Come to me and I will give you rest – eternal rest”. Now he can bask in the infinite glory of the Resurrection and a “life without end”. For this is the calling of all of us as we wait to meet him again in our own final journey to God. Such is the promise of our faith “that we will meet again” and this is what gives us hopeful anticipation and the courage to live our lives in the precious gift of love – to love as God loves.
Peace and Blessing,
Wilfred Gallant

When Vince lost Kay, the “light of his life”, I composed this song, What Can I Say? Now he can at last join with Kay “united, as “two souls in one. "In vows, we made, we wedded “two-in-one”. Now in two worlds, I feel so broke, like a bristled rose-like thorn. I hold in hope, a promise so divine, where God will join our souls - united - “two-in-one”. R.
Song’s Origin
This song was created when a very dear friend of mine, Dr. Vince Kachafanas, came to me after the unexpected death of his wife Kay. Having himself come from Cape Breton; I happen to develop a close friendship with him while he was working on his doctorate at Merrill-Palmer Institute in Detroit. Kay passed away three weeks after being diagnosed with cancer, neither of them having had a chance to put things in order. The following song was composed after attempting to put myself in my friend’s shoes to in an attempt to experience the world from his perspective.
Here is a Note I received from Vince after composing this song and mailing it to him.
Dear Wilfred
I received your very moving letter, print and your very lovely song. How thoughtful, how gracious, how poignant! Words simply cannot express my emotions.
"Wilfred, everything happened so fast that Kay and I did not have time to talk or discuss matters of concern and importance or what was meaningful in our lives. I guess we really thought we would be able to beat the illness – but it was not meant to be.
Wilfred, my world was shattered and everything has become meaningless. Kay was my whole world – the center of my loving – yes, I’m having a difficult time coping with her death; but I do “hold in hope, [as you allude to in your song] belief divine, a reunion uncompared when God will reunite our souls and join us two in one”.
Thank you, Wilfred for those joyous and kind words which are the essence of my true feeling and thinking.
Thank God for good and true friends like you. May you continue to walk in God’s countenance. Thank you once again. God, bless you and yours.
Yours in friendship and love.
Vince
On one of my home visits to Cape Breton, I met with Vince which I had previously done on numerous occasions. Knowing he had a piano in his house, I went to his home and played the composition for him. He was very moved by my thoughtfulness and expressed his gratitude for this singular gesture on my part.
Later, on March 10, 2022, I had the opportunity to share the Power Point Presentation that I did of this song and this was Vince’s response:
Wilfred, my friend, this is the first time I experienced this presentation done with brilliance and honest feelings - you are a sensitive talented artist – you show depth of feeling and keen sense of understanding of human emotions. Only a caring, loving soul can completely understand the human element regarding the human soul’s experience!! -GOD BLESS YOU and YOURS! VK

What Can I Say
Composed & Copyrighted © Feb. 1, 1998

When words are not enough, what can I say? What arid voice or feinted speech can numb this shattered disbelief? A charted tongue, well aimed to ease the pain, can often make me feel so ruthlessly betrayed. R.
Refrain: What can I say? I want to cry in one fierce voice so that the world can hear my plea. I’ve lost my love and since she’s gone, in shattered hopes, my life forlorn, has never been the same.
So quick to hide, the darkened sky obscured, where storms befall my every move, like blasted, billowed sails. Who can discern this harrowed space - alone? On bended knees, I pray: “An angel to my care!” R.
In restless sleep, my mind to fertile fields. In sweeping haste and taunting jest, I’m swallowed by this blow. Through crippling dreams and flesh-torn pain, unfurled, in darkened glow, I see a light to guide my path. R.
In vows, we made, we wedded “two-in-one”. Now in two worlds, I feel so broke, like a bristled rose-like thorn. I hold in hope, a promise so divine, where God will join our souls - united - “two-in-one”. R.

Vince had an indomitable spirit and and a most gracious smile. His life was a gift which reflected a life well lived.
