Obituary of Mina Olga Gardiner Gillis (nee Krewenki) Glace Bay
It is with heartfelt sadness that we, the family of Mina Gillis, age 99 of Glace Bay, announce her passing on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, at the Glace Bay General Hospital, with her family by her side.
Born in Thorburn, NS, Mina spent most of her life living in Glace Bay. Mina was the daughter of Catherine (Brown) Krewenki, and Paul Krewenki,
Mina is remembered for her kindness and generous spirit. Mina operated her own business, Mina’s Dairy, for thirty years alongside her husband Billy.
Mina is survived by her two children, daughter, Jackie (Gary) Whitney, son, Robert (Patricia) Gardiner, and special nephew David (Brenda) Krewenki.
She is also survived by her grandchildren, Andrea Whitney (Brad), Victoria, BC, Garilyn Whitney (Dez), Ottawa, ON, Cindy (Scott) Whitton, St. John’s, NL, Bobbie Leigh (Jeff) Smith, Sydney, NS, Alexandra (Jeremy) Newman, St. John’s, NL, and Bridgette Hopewell.
Mina is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Liam and Keith Whitton, Michaela and Alec Smith, and Amanda Penney.
Mina was predeceased by her daughter, Karen (Puxky) Morrison, and granddaughter Cathy Hopewell. Mina was predeceased by her first husband, John Joseph (Jack) Gardiner, and her second husband, William (Billy) Gillis.
She was also predeceased by her sisters Muriel Butler, Marsha Blunden, Cecilia, Mary, Catherine, Helen Krewenki, as well as brothers Dan, Paul, Jim, Bookie and John.
Our family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Dr. James MacLean for his care provided to Mina over the years. Also, a warm thank you to the many staff of the third-floor medical unit at the Glace Bay General Hospital.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Glace Bay. Private committal prayers will be held in St. John’s Cemetery, Glace Bay, NS.
