Paddy & Sandra McNeil posted a condolence
Obviously Bernie being a police officer inspired many twithin the family tree in becoming an officer. I recall on many occasions speaking with Bernie and about the role of a peace officer. He always seemed to have time for the small things in life while being challenged on the difficulties as an officer of the law. He will be fondly remembered as a person with character, determination and dependability but mostly for the compassionate way he dealt with all he met. Chief Bernie your time to stand down has come, rest in God's Peace. To the family remember the fun times, the work ethic and the love he showered upon you all. Ret. S/Sgt Paddy McNeil, RCMP Always A Bay Boy!

On behalf of myself and my wife I would like to extend our sincere sympathy & sorrow on the death of your Dad. I knew your Dad well and he was always pleasant and easy to speak with and as retirees we shared stories of the early days of policing. I last met him at Simeon's Restaurant and he was really positive in his attitude towards his illness & he knew the fight he had in front of him. Again on behalf of myself and my wife please accept our sincere sympathy. May he rest in Peace. John

Dear Dotsie, Shaunah, Derrick, and David, We are very sorry to hear about Bernie's passing. He will be missed. He always knew how to capture his audiences with his stories and I will always cherish the memories of him spending weekends with us when he was on course in Ottawa. I clearly recall staying up very late hoping that he had one more story to tell. We both entered the police profession in 1965 and I always enjoyed swapping stories with him. There is no doubt that he will be missed but we are comforted in knowing that you are together. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Love Bob and Denise

Please accept my deepest sympathy on the loss of such a fine man - husband, father, grandfather, brother and peace officer, just to name a few. He was many things to many people, I'm sure. I worked at the RCMP Detachment in Glace Bay in the early 70's and it was here that I met Bernie. He was such a gentleman and so good natured that I always enjoyed any time we touched base through our departments. I moved away and didn't see him much after that but when home, if I ran into him it was always a nice visit. Also, he used to ask my sister (she worked at BNS) how I was doing, over the years, which touched me deeply. I am sure you will all feel his absence greatly. Memories are your best friends in times like this - cherish those. May God grant you peace & strength at this most difficult time. May Bernie rest in peace. Regards, Tippi Hinks

We are so sorry to learn about Bernie's death. He was very special to us and we fondly remember all the great times we had together. How wonderful it was to take Bernie and Dotsie to see The Al Jolson Story. We sang all of the songs when we returned home. Shaunah still has not forgotten. We also hold dear the vacation we shared in New Hampshire. Bernie knew everyone in Waterville by the time we left. He would always tell those he met that they should go to Cape Breton if they wanted to vacation in God's backyard. So farewell my dear brother -in-law. Rest in your well deserved peace. Much love to all of his family. Ron and Sharon

My deepest sympathy to Dot, Derrick, David, Shaunnah as well as Bernie' brothers, sisters and other family. I had the good fortune of getting to know Bernie while I was teaching in Dominion. Upon the chats we had, it was easy to see that he was an excellent police officer and a man dedicated to his job and family. Bernie, my friend, thank you and may God rest your soul.

Dave and Family, I am heartbroken over Bernie's passing and want to offer my sincerest condolences. Bernie meant so much to so many people and he was taken from all of us, especially his family, too soon. It is difficult to put into words how much Bernie meant to me. The best tribute I can pay to him and the person he was is to say he always treated me like I was one of his own sons. Thinking back over the years, particularly after losing my own father, I just don't know what I would have done if Bernie hadn't been around. He was a second father to me and I love him for it. We'll miss him but he left enough good memories for all of us to carry forward and make sure he'll never be forgotten. Rest in Peace Bernie.
