It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of our sister, aunt, and friend, Paulette Darlene Battiste RN, 69, of Halifax on Saturday, October 7th, 2023 at the Halifax Infirmary, surrounded by her family.
Paulette was born in Glace Bay on June 16th, 1954, to the late Sidney and Mary (Ford) Battiste. After graduating from high school, she attended St. Mary’s University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1976. She went on to work at the Victoria General Hospital as a Unit Clerk on an orthopedics floor. In 1982, Paulette chose a new career path and graduated from the Victoria General School of Nursing, class of 1984. She began her nursing career at the Victoria General Hospital in orthopedics for 15 years and continued to work on 4.1 at the Halifax Infirmary in Vascular and General Surgery for another 15 years. In nursing, Paulette felt she had found her true calling and loved every moment of her career.
Paulette had a long, tough battle with metastatic breast cancer and a short battle with covid but continued a valiant fight and remained unwavering throughout this journey and even somehow managed a sense of humor along the way.
She is survived by her sisters Marilyn (Harold) Langley, Morinville, Alberta, Debbie, Halifax, and brother Jamie (Angela), Glace Bay. She is also survived by her beloved nieces and nephews Chris Holland, and Stephanie (Langley) Guimaraes of Alberta; Andrew and Andrea Battiste of Glace Bay, several great-nieces, Sidney and Grace Langley, Avery and Kaylee Guimaraes, Averie Battiste and great-nephews Ben Guimaraes, Aaron Langley, and Noah Holland. Paulette had a special great love for her nieces and nephews and was always willing to spend time with them and partake in their lives and interests.
Paulette was predeceased by her parents Sidney and Mary (Ford) Battiste, and nephew, Joel Langley (2022).
Our family would like to thank Dr. Jennifer Melvin, Medical Oncologist, who often went far and beyond for Paulette, nurses Carmen and Lynn, Dr. Lisa Barrett and her COVID team, the VON, the physicians and nurses of 8.2, especially charge nurse Vicki Martin, staff nurses Melanie, Jessica, Kristin, Patience, Wilma, Christian, & Neisha and any other member of the team who may have helped along the way.
